Rajasthan Royals' IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans in Jaipur began with a major surprise at the toss as Yashasvi Jaiswal walked out as captain instead of Riyan Parag. Jaiswal won the toss after Shubman Gill called tails, but it landed heads, and RR chose to field first at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The RR stand-in skipper said the wicket looked good for batting and Rajasthan wanted to chase under lights. But the bigger story was the team news. Riyan Parag was missing due to a hamstring issue, while Nandre Burger was also left out after a difficult run with the ball. Shimron Hetmyer and Yash Raj Punja came into the RR XI.

IPL 2026: Riyan Parag misses out due to hamstring injury

Riyan Parag is not playing today's RR vs GT game because he pulled his hamstring in the previous match. Jaiswal confirmed the update at the toss and said the Royals hope Riyan Parag returns soon. That means his absence is injury-related rather than tactical.

Riyan Parag's absence is a significant blow for RR because he has been central to their batting plans and leadership structure this season. He gives RR stability in the middle order, can shift gears quickly, and has grown into a more responsible figure in the side. Losing Riyan Parag at this stage of the tournament is far from ideal, especially with Rajasthan still trying to stay sharp in the playoff race.

In Riyan Parag's absence, Jaiswal has taken over the RR captaincy. It is a big moment for the young opener, who now has to manage both his batting role and leadership duties against a strong Gujarat Titans side. Jaiswal sounded upbeat at the toss, saying he was 'really excited”'and looking forward to a good game.

Shimron Hetmyer gets a chance to strengthen RR batting

With Riyan Parag unavailable, Shimron Hetmyer has come into the playing XI. That move makes sense because RR need an experienced middle-order batter who can handle pressure and finish innings. Hetmyer brings power, left-handed variety and proven IPL experience.

However, replacing Riyan Parag is not straightforward. Riyan Parag's role is not only about runs; he also helps connect the top order with the finishers. Hetmyer can provide explosive hitting, but RR will need someone else to take responsibility if early wickets fall. That makes Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel even more important in this match.

Nandre Burger dropped after expensive run

Nandre Burger is not playing today's match because Rajasthan appear to have moved away from him after a poor run of form. Unlike Parag, there was no injury update given for Burger at the toss. That strongly suggests his absence is a tactical call based on recent performances.

Burger has had a tough last three matches. He conceded 41 runs in 3 overs against Delhi Capitals, 59 runs in 4 overs against Punjab Kings and 50 runs in 3.3 overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Across those three games, he gave away 150 runs in just 10.3 overs and picked up only one wicket. His economy rate in each of those outings went above 13.50, which is damaging for any bowling attack in a tight IPL season.

This is a sharp contrast to his better spell earlier against Lucknow Super Giants, where he took 2/27 on April 22. Since then, though, he has struggled to control the scoring rate. For a fast bowler expected to provide breakthroughs and pressure, that kind of run makes selection difficult.

RR vs GT: Yash Raj Punja comes into the XI

Yash Raj Punja has been included in the Rajasthan side in place of Burger. This looks like RR trying to refresh their bowling attack and reduce the pressure created by expensive overs. Against Gujarat Titans, that will be important because GT have a batting unit capable of punishing loose bowling.

Punja’s inclusion gives Rajasthan a new option and possibly a better match-up depending on the surface. Jaiswal said the wicket looked good, which may mean bowlers will need discipline more than raw pace. If Punja can hit his lengths and avoid giving width, he can help RR keep control in the middle phases.

GT also make one change

Gujarat Titans also made a change for the Jaipur clash, with Prasidh Krishna replacing Manav Suthar. Shubman Gill said he would have bowled first as well, which suggests both teams saw some chasing advantage on the surface.

Gill also spoke about the need for Gujarat to focus on their strengths and execute better in close games. He said most of their matches had been tight and that GT needed to put in 'that little bit extra.' Gujarat will assess the first couple of overs before deciding what a par score is, and Gill said they would look to get 10-15 runs above that to give their bowlers a cushion.
