Mumbai Indians will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Sunday, May 10. For MI, this is not just another league fixture. Sitting ninth on the points table with only three wins from 10 matches, the five-time champions are under serious pressure and have almost no room left for mistakes.
Their recent win over Lucknow Super Giants gave them a badly needed lift, but the equation remains tough. Mumbai can still reach 14 points if they win all four remaining matches, which means every match from here has to be treated like a final.
Rohit Sharma and Rickelton key at the top
Rohit Sharma’s return to form has come at the perfect time for Mumbai Indians. After missing time due to injury, the former MI captain looked close to his best against Lucknow Super Giants, smashing 84 off 44 balls in a successful chase of 228. That innings did more than win MI a match. It gave their dressing room belief that the top order can still dominate under pressure.
Ryan Rickelton is expected to continue alongside Rohit at the top. The left-hander has shown decent rhythm and gives MI a useful right-left combination in the powerplay. Against RCB, this opening pair will have a big job because Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood can be dangerous if there is early movement in Raipur. If Rohit and Rickelton survive the new ball, Mumbai will feel they can attack the middle overs.
Suryakumar Yadav availability gives MI a boost
Suryakumar Yadav’s availability is a major positive for Mumbai Indians. There was slight uncertainty after he and his wife Devisha Shetty welcomed a baby girl, but reports suggest Suryakumar has informed the team management that he is available for the RCB clash. That should allow him to slot back at No. 3, where his presence changes the entire feel of MI’s batting order.
Suryakumar also captained Mumbai in their previous match against LSG in Hardik Pandya’s absence and led the side to a six-wicket win. If Hardik is not cleared to play, Suryakumar is likely to lead again. But even purely as a batter, he is vital. On a ground with bigger boundaries, his ability to find gaps, rotate strike and attack both pace and spin makes him one of MI’s most important players.
Hardik Pandya fitness remains the big call
The biggest selection question is still Hardik Pandya. The MI captain missed the last game against Lucknow due to back spasms and has been undergoing fitness checks ahead of the RCB match. He has joined the squad in Raipur, but the final decision will depend on the medical team’s assessment.
If Hardik is fully fit, he walks straight back into the XI and leads the side. His numbers this season may not be outstanding, with 146 runs and four wickets in eight matches, but his role gives MI balance. He allows Mumbai to carry an extra batting option, gives them overs if required, and adds experience in pressure moments. In a must-win match, that all-round cushion matters.
However, MI cannot afford to pick him if he is only half-fit. A back issue can affect both batting movement and bowling workload, so the team will have to be careful. If he misses out again, MI may need to adjust their combination and lean more heavily on Suryakumar’s captaincy.
Why Shardul Thakur should replace Deepak Chahar
Shardul Thakur should be preferred ahead of Deepak Chahar in MI’s strongest XI for this game. Raipur’s surface is expected to offer some help to pacers early, but as the match progresses, variations, cutters and death-over execution could become more important. That is where Shardul’s skill set becomes valuable.
Shardul can bowl in different phases, especially when the pitch starts holding slightly or when batters are trying to force the pace. He also gives Mumbai batting depth at No. 9, which is important in a pressure match. In a contest where one lower-order cameo can change the total, Shardul’s ability to contribute 15 or 20 quick runs should not be ignored.
Deepak Chahar brings swing with the new ball, but Mumbai already have options to attack early. Shardul offers more flexibility across the innings, and that makes him the better fit for this particular XI.
Middle order and all-round balance
Tilak Varma remains one of the most reliable names in Mumbai’s middle order. His calmness against spin and ability to shift gears make him especially important in Raipur, where the larger outfield could reward smart placement more than blind hitting. If MI lose early wickets, Tilak can rebuild. If they start well, he can keep the tempo moving.
Naman Dhir adds power and gives MI another Indian batting option in the lower middle order. Will Jacks and Corbin Bosch provide useful all-round depth. Jacks can attack spin and offer part-time overs, while Bosch brings seam-bowling support and late-order hitting. This structure gives MI enough batting depth without weakening their bowling too much.

Bumrah and Ghazanfar lead the bowling plan
Jasprit Bumrah remains Mumbai’s biggest weapon with the ball. Against RCB, his battle with Virat Kohli could be one of the decisive moments of the match. Kohli has carried a heavy batting load for Bengaluru in recent games, and if Bumrah can remove him early or keep him quiet, MI will immediately put pressure on an RCB batting unit that has looked slightly shaky.
AM Ghazanfar should be the frontline spin option. The Raipur pitch may not be a raging turner, but the bigger boundaries could help spinners if they bowl with control. Ghazanfar’s role in the middle overs will be important, especially against players who like to use the pace of the ball.
Raghu Sharma, who impressed in the previous match and picked up his maiden IPL wicket, can be used as an Impact Player depending on conditions. If MI bowl second and need an extra specialist option, he could come into the picture.
MI need their best XI in virtual knockout mode vs RCB
MI's playoff hopes are hanging by a thin thread, but they are not finished yet. The win over LSG showed that this team still has enough quality to hurt opponents. But from here, there is no space for casual cricket. Every selection call has to be sharp, every over has to be planned, and every senior player has to deliver.
Against RCB, MI’s strongest XI should balance experience, power and flexibility. Rohit, Suryakumar, Tilak and Hardik give the batting its core. Jacks, Bosch and Shardul add depth. Bumrah and Ghazanfar give the attack wicket-taking quality. If this group clicks, Mumbai can still make the playoff race uncomfortable for everyone above them.
