There is a specific kind of team that is simultaneously the most exciting and most fragile thing in cricket, one where three players at the top are so dominant that the entire structure of the batting order has been quietly hollowed out beneath them without anyone noticing until the day it matters most. India between 2013 and 2019 were that team. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scored so consistently and so heavily that the number four slot became the most anxiously auditioned position in world cricket with over a dozen players tried and none settled. When New Zealand reduced India to 5 for 3 in the 2019 World Cup semi-final at Manchester the entire edifice collapsed because there was nothing behind the top three capable of rebuilding from that position. Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 are that team. Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler are as dominant a top three as this tournament has produced this season and on Monday IPL 2026 night during GT vs MI at Ahmedabad when all three were gone inside 4.4 overs the rest of the team produced 100 all out and lost by 99 runs. The parallel is not a loose one. It is almost uncomfortably precise. Gujarat Titans top three are so good they have made the middle order structurally incapable of handling pressure This is the central irony of the Gt problem and it is the same irony that defined India's ODI era for six years. When your top three are exceptional enough to carry the team through most games the middle order never faces the kind of extended pressure situations that would develop their ability to handle them. India's number four candidates between 2015 and 2019 walked in regularly with 8 overs left and 300 already on the board and were asked to slog, a skill set that is entirely useless when the number four is suddenly required to walk in at 5 for 3 with 40 overs remaining and build an innings from scratch. GT's Glenn Phillips Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan are in the same trap. Matthew Hayden said it himself at the press conference, these are players who should be batting for seven balls at a strike rate of 180 not facing 19 combined deliveries trying to rebuild an innings that the top order left in ruins. Tewatia and Shahrukh scored 25 runs from 24 balls combined on Monday for GT. That is not a failure of talent. That is a failure of role clarity, players being asked to do something their entire preparation and training has never equipped them to do because the assumption has always been that Gill, Sai and Buttler would handle the hard part. IPL 2026: Monday at Ahmedabad was almost a shot for shot remake of Manchester 2019 The sequence of events against Mumbai Indians was so familiar to anyone who watched that World Cup semi-final that it almost felt scripted. Bumrah removed Sai Sudharsan on the very first delivery of the chase. Buttler and Gill followed inside the powerplay. By the end of the sixth over GT were 45 for 3 and facing the exact same structural crisis India faced in Manchester, a batting order designed around three players who were no longer in it, with a middle order never built for the task now suddenly required to perform it under maximum pressure. Washington Sundar managed 26 and that was as close as GT got to a partnership of substance because there was nobody capable of giving him one at the other end. Faf du Plessis watching from the commentary box said something that cut directly to the point, he looked at the GT middle order coming in and genuinely could not identify a player who had the form or the game to score a match-winning hundred from that position in those circumstances. "We were speaking about it off-air when we were watching the game and we were like, 'who's going to play like a Varma innings here now; who's going to get a hundred from the position that they're in right now?' I didn't feel like there was anybody that threatens that," he said. "Current form, yeah. I'm not sure anyone's getting a hundred. But if you put that into other teams or out through the IPL, you could name a guy. A guy's coming in and he's got the potential to do it. He's got form or whatever he's got, he's got the shots. That middle order right now, I'm not sure." Faf concluded In 2019 at Manchester the same question was being asked and the answer was also no. The GT bench apparently has solutions, Nishant Sindhu who has played India A cricket and Kumar Kushagra who was the second highest scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season have both been sitting unused, but the first team has kept faith with names over current form and the scoreboard on Monday night was the consequence. When you blink against a world-class player like Tilak Varma even on a spicy wicket that is your downfall. But GT blinked before Tilak even arrived. GT blinked the moment the top three walked back into the pavilion in the fourth over. Also READ: IPL 2026 points table: Mumbai Indians surpass CSK after NRR-boosting win against GT GT are a glass cannon and they need to fix it before the playoffs or the tournament will fix it for them The term glass cannon exists in gaming to describe a unit with extraordinary offensive power and almost no defensive resilience, capable of destroying anything when functioning correctly and destroyed by almost anything when it is not. GT are the IPL's glass cannon in 2026 and the problem is getting harder to ignore with every match that exposes it. When Gill and Sai and Buttler fire together GT can post 220 and win comfortably. When they do not the GT scores 100 all out and loses by 99 runs and the margin between those two outcomes is three early wickets, a margin so thin that any quality bowling attack with a plan can exploit it on any given day. India spent the entire period between 2013 and 2019 hoping the top three would fire in the knockout games and when they did not in Manchester the tournament ended. GT have a league format with enough games to absorb bad days but the playoffs do not offer that insurance and a middle order that produced 57 between four batters on Monday will not survive a knockout stage against PBKS or RCB bowling at them with intent. Hayden from GT said the boat was sinking and he was on the mast. "So the worry isn't just today about the middle order. It'd be unfair to say that, you know, they were going to go on and score 13 runs an over because by that stage, I felt like as a batting coach, I was on the mast and the boat was sinking." Hayden said. That is an honest assessment. The question is whether GT are willing to change the crew before the boat goes under or whether they will keep trusting the same names and hoping the top three bail them out every single time. History from 2019 has a very specific answer to that question and it is not a comfortable one.

BCCI presented the mechanism, functioning and format of the league, which included information on prize money, IPL tournament summary and franchise revenue system in April 2008, New Delhi.
The IPL league was started by 8 teams representing major cities across the country and the reason for its global sensation can be the involvement of international players and emerging talents. Pune Warriors India exited the IPL in May 2013 due to financial disagreements with the BCCI.
The two powerful teams Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended due to the behaviour issues, including involvement in match fixing and betting scandals. Later on two teams were replaced by Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions, which were based in Pune and Rajkot for two seasons in the IPL.
The IPL organizes an auction annually, but every three years, a special event known as the Mega Auction takes place. During this auction, teams are allowed to retain only six players, while the remaining team members must enter the auction pool.
