Chennai Super Kings are still alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race, but the biggest question around the camp remains centred on MS Dhoni. CSK face Lucknow Super Giants at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, and with the match being played at Chepauk, the anticipation around Dhoni has naturally grown louder.
The former CSK captain has not played a single match this season because of a calf injury, and his absence has already stretched much longer than first expected. Chennai have recovered after a poor start and are now pushing for a top-four spot, which makes every team-selection call more delicate. At this stage, Dhoni’s return is not just an emotional topic for fans, but also a tactical decision for a side trying to protect its playoff hopes.
MS Dhoni back in training but comeback still unclear
The good news for CSK fans is that Dhoni has resumed training. In a video shared by the franchise, he was even seen bowling in the nets and joking, 'Wicket chahiye humko.' That clip has sparked fresh hope that the five-time IPL-winning captain could still return before the season ends.
However, training in the nets is not the same as being match-ready. Dhoni had initially been expected to miss only a couple of weeks due to a calf strain, but his recovery was delayed after he hurt the calf again. He has now missed CSK’s first 10 matches of IPL 2026, and the team has not given any firm confirmation about his availability for the LSG clash.

CSK coaches stay careful on MS Dhoni update
CSK's support staff have also been cautious with their words. Bowling coach Eric Simmons recently said Dhoni was 'improving' but added, 'He will be ready when he’s ready. He knows when he’s ready to play.' That statement suggests the decision is still being handled carefully, with Dhoni’s own fitness call likely to matter as much as the team management’s view.
Batting coach Michael Hussey also revealed that Dhoni has stayed away from match venues because he does not want to become a distraction for the team. That says plenty about the situation. If Dhoni returns at Chepauk, the noise will be enormous, but CSK also have to think about balance, roles and the pressure of a must-win stage of the season.

Will MS Dhoni play for CSK against LSG?
As things stand, Dhoni is not confirmed to play against Lucknow Super Giants. His return to training is a positive sign, but there is still no official indication that he will be included in the playing XI for Sunday’s match. Given CSK’s playoff situation, the franchise may avoid changing its combination unless Dhoni is fully fit and ready to contribute.
Former CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has also suggested that bringing Dhoni back could be complicated because it may force Chennai to alter their settled combination. That is the key issue. The heart says Chepauk is the perfect stage for a Dhoni return, maybe even a farewell appearance. The cricketing logic says CSK will be cautious.
So, the big update is this: Dhoni has started training and looks closer than before, but his participation in CSK vs LSG remains doubtful unless the team confirms a late fitness clearance. For now, fans can hope, but they may have to wait a little longer.
