Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL 2026 campaign has gone from near write-off to one of the season’s more ridiculous comeback stories. After failing to win any of their first six games, KKR have suddenly strung together four victories in a row and dragged themselves back into the playoff conversation.
Their next challenge is a big one: table-toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on May 13. With four matches left and eight points still available, Ajinkya Rahane’s side still control their own fate. But the big selection question is whether Matheesha Pathirana finally gets a game, especially with Varun Chakravarthy carrying a foot concern.
Will Matheesha Pathirana play vs RCB for KKR?
As things stand, Pathirana is fit and available, but he is unlikely to walk straight into KKR’s XI unless they decide to change their overseas balance. Shane Watson has confirmed that Pathirana is 'fit and ready to go' and continues to push his case, but also admitted that KKR’s current team structure has made it hard for him to break into the playing XI or Impact Player setup.
"Pathirana continues to push his case. He’s fit and ready to go. But, with the way our team’s been set up, it’s been hard for him to get into the playing 11 or 12. To be able to know that a player of that calibre is ready to make his mark gives our group a lot of confidence," Watson said.
That is the key point. Pathirana’s absence is not fitness-related anymore. It is about combination. KKR have settled into a winning formula with Finn Allen, Cameron Green and Rovman Powell involved in the overseas mix, while Sunil Narine is untouchable because of his all-round value. Once those four slots are occupied, Pathirana has no easy route in.
So, unless KKR rest or drop one overseas player, Pathirana may have to wait again. The temptation to use his death bowling will be real, especially against RCB’s powerful batting line-up, but changing a team that has won four in a row is never a simple call.
Varun Chakravarthy fitness is KKR's bigger concern ahead of RCB game in Raipur
The more urgent issue for KKR is Varun Chakravarthy. He has taken 10 wickets in his last five games and has been central to their middle-overs squeeze alongside Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy. But he hurt his foot in Delhi, was reportedly seen walking with a stick at the team hotel, and did not train.
Watson said Varun was sore in the second-last game and in 'a lot of pain' in the last match, even though he continued to bowl well. KKR are monitoring him closely and hoping he is available.
If Varun is fit, KKR’s best XI remains largely unchanged. If he is ruled out, the replacement is likely to be Prashant Solanki or Daksh Kamra. Solanki is the more straightforward leg-spin option, although he has not played an IPL game since 2022. Daksh Kamra is an uncapped spin-bowling all-rounder whose bowling style is said to resemble Varun’s visually, but throwing him into a must-win match against RCB would be a bold call.
KKR best predicted XI vs RCB
KKR’s strongest XI, assuming Varun is fit, should look like this:
- Finn Allen
- Ajinkya Rahane (c)
- Angkrish Raghuvanshi
- Cameron Green
- Rinku Singh
- Manish Pandey
- Rovman Powell
- Sunil Narine
- Anukul Roy
- Kartik Tyagi
- Vaibhav Arora
Impact Player: Varun Chakravarthy
If Varun is not fit, KKR could use Prashant Solanki or Daksh Kamra as the Impact Player. If they want Pathirana, the most likely overseas player to miss out would be Rovman Powell, but that would reduce finishing power. Dropping Green makes little sense because he is finally stepping up and offers both batting depth and seam-bowling value. Finn Allen has just found form, and Narine is non-negotiable.
Why KKR may avoid Matheesha Pathirana for now
Pathirana is the kind of bowler who can change a match at the death, and against RCB, that skill has obvious value. But KKR’s turnaround has been built on balance. Their batting has averaged only 4.5 dismissals per innings during the winning streak, which shows how much more settled the order has become. Allen has started firing, Rinku looks fluent, Green is contributing, and Rahane’s calm has given the side structure.
KKR have also won four matches without always dominating the powerplay. Their real strength has been the middle overs, where Narine, Varun and Anukul have slowed games down. That is why Varun’s fitness matters more than Pathirana’s availability.
So the answer is simple: Pathirana can play, but probably will not unless KKR change their overseas combination. Varun’s injury watch is the real selection drama. If Varun is cleared, KKR should stick close to the winning XI. If he misses out, Solanki or Daksh Kamra are likelier like-for-like options than Pathirana.
