Mumbai Indians batter Ryan Rickelton has shared a crucial update on skipper Hardik Pandya, who suffered a back spasm ahead of the clash against Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise had earlier confirmed the development through an official statement on social media, with Pandya being ruled out just before the game at the Wankhede Stadium.
Mumbai forced into late leadership reshuffle after Hardik Pandya’s fitness concern
In Pandya’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav stepped in as the stand-in captain. The franchise issued a brief statement clarifying the situation.
“Hardik Pandya is unwell with back spasm, hence Suryakumar Yadav is captain for today's game.”
Suryakumar also confirmed the same at the toss, underlining that the change was due to Pandya’s fitness issue,“Hardik's not well tonight, so I'm going to step into his shoes,” he said.
Ryan Rickelton sheds light on Pandya’s condition with candid post-match remarks
Rickelton, who played a key role in Mumbai’s win, spoke about Pandya’s condition during the post-match press conference and admitted that there is still uncertainty around the severity of the issue.
"I don't know when he's expected to be back. I found out this afternoon that he had back spasms, so I'm unaware of the extent of it. I don't want to call it an injury. I'm unaware of the extent of how bad it is or what he's feeling. But I'm sure he'll be with the group again as we head to Raipur this week," he said.
His comments indicate that while the situation is not fully clear, there is optimism that Pandya could return to the squad soon.
Mumbai deliver statement chase to register much-needed victory
Despite the setback, Mumbai finally managed to get a win. It has been a difficult season so far, but they produced a brilliant performance against Lucknow on Monday, chasing down a massive 229-run target at the Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit Sharma returned to the side after a hamstring injury and made an immediate impact at the top. He was well supported by Rickelton as the duo stitched together a strong opening partnership. Both batters scored in the 80s and ensured Mumbai crossed the line in a high-scoring encounter.
With seven defeats already, Mumbai’s playoff hopes are almost over. However, the side continues to test different combinations in the remaining matches, aiming to assess players and build a clear strategy going forward to next season.
