The BCCI is close to announcing the venues for the IPL 2026 playoffs and final but a political controversy in Bengaluru is threatening to strip the city of the showpiece event it would normally host by right.
The MLA ticket problem that is causing the chaos in Bengaluru
According to BCCI sources speaking to ANI, playoff matches are likely to be split between Punjab and Karnataka, but the final, which convention dictates should be hosted by the defending champions' home ground, may be moved to another city if the ongoing MLA ticket dispute in Bengaluru cannot be resolved quickly.
Issue traces back to before the tournament even began. Ahead of the IPL 2026 opener between RCB and SRH at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar publicly suggested that every MLA should receive at least five IPL tickets, arguing that elected representatives are VIPs who should not have to stand in line or go through the standard ticketing process.
Statement at that time generated immediate controversy. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar subsequently announced that three tickets for RCB home matches would be allocated to MLAs and MPs, an arrangement that sparked its own round of criticism and scrutiny.
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara later attempted to clarify the situation, saying tickets are non-transferable and can only be used by the MLA themselves or immediate family members.
But the damage in terms of public perception and the BCCI's comfort with Bengaluru as a venue for the most important match of the season has clearly been done. A BCCI source was unambiguous about the stakes, "If there is no solution then BCCI will move the final to another city."

IPL 2026 Final: What the convention says and why this matters
By the established IPL convention, the defending champions host the final, which means RCB and the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru have the first right to the May 31 showpiece.
RCB won their maiden title last season and are currently second in the IPL 2026 table with 12 points and the best NRR among the teams level on points, meaning they are firmly on track to qualify for the playoffs and potentially host the final.
Stripping that hosting right away because of a political row over ticket allocations for elected officials would be a significant and embarrassing development for cricket in Karnataka. The BCCI is clearly hoping a resolution can be found quickly, but the fact that it is already being discussed as a possibility tells you how seriously the board is taking the situation.
The likely playoff picture and what comes next for RCB
Punjab Kings lead the IPL 2026 table with 13 points from nine matches, with RCB, SRH, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans all on 12 points and separated by net run rate. In the IPL 2026 mid-table CSK and DC both have 8 points, KKR are eighth with 7, MI have 6 from ten games and LSG are last with just 4 points and their playoff hopes effectively over.
IPL Playoff schedule is expected to feature Qualifier 1 on May 26, the Eliminator on May 27, Qualifier 2 on May 29 and the final on May 31. The split of matches between Punjab, likely Mullanpur, and Karnataka, likely Bengaluru, is the anticipated format.
Whether the final remains in Bengaluru depends entirely on whether the political noise around MLA tickets can be silenced in the next few days.
