The opening two days of the French Open 2026 saw a series of major upsets in both men's and women's singles. The top-ranked Brit Emma Raducanu suffered a first-round exit, followed by an early elimination for the seventh seed Taylor Fritz.
Taylor Fritz, the former World No. 4, suffered a shock 6(5)-7, 6(5)-7, 7-6(9), 1-6 loss against the fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy. The 21-year-old Basavareddy is an Indian-origin player and is ranked outside the top 150 in men's singles. He won the first two sets in tiebreakers to stun the Paris crowd, and then dominated Fritz by winning the fourth set by 6-1.
Fritz became the first top-10 seed to suffer a first-round exit on Day 1 in the second Grand Slam event of the season. Notably, he also suffered an early elimination in a clay major last season.
In other major upsets on Day 1 in Paris, the retiring duo of Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils lost their opening games. Jasper de Jong stunned the three-time Grand Slam winner, Wawrinka, with a 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. Former World No. 6 and the home favourite Monfils suffered a five-set thriller against the fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston.
The 12th seed, Jiri Lehecka, was also beaten by Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets in the first round on Monday.
