In a major step towards strengthening the fast-bowling depth in women’s cricket, the BCCI and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) have jointly launched the ‘Speed Queen’ initiative, set to begin on January 5, 2026. The programme is designed to identify and nurture promising pace bowlers from the Under-19 and Under-23 age groups across the country.
While similar talent-identification drives have long existed in men’s cricket, this marks the first time such a structured fast-bowling hunt has been introduced exclusively for women. The WPL has already released detailed guidelines, outlining eligibility criteria and the application process for aspiring cricketers.
How to apply for the BCCI WPL ‘Speed Queen’ initiative
Step 1: Registration
Applicants must register under their respective age category (U19 or U23), fill in basic personal details, and select their nearest WPL franchise zone.
Step 2: Video submission
Candidates are required to upload a side-on bowling video and select up to three deliveries for evaluation. Videos must be recorded in landscape mode, preferably using a white leather ball, with a full run-up and clear release visible.
Step 3: Evaluation and trials
AI tools and expert coaches will assess the submitted clips. Shortlisted bowlers will receive invitations for physical trials during their respective zonal trial weeks. The talent hunt will commence in Delhi on January 5 and conclude in Lucknow on January 16.
Why the ‘Speed Queen’ initiative could reshape women’s cricket
Women’s cricket is witnessing unprecedented growth, especially after India’s historic Women’s World Cup triumph on November 2, which significantly boosted interest and viewership. However, despite the progress, India continue to face a shortage of high-pace seam bowlers capable of consistently troubling top batters.
The ‘Speed Queen’ initiative could bridge that gap. WPL franchises will closely monitor the programme, offering them an opportunity to scout raw talent early, invest in long-term development, and potentially sign players for future editions. This, in turn, could strengthen India’s pace resources at the international level.
The fourth edition of the WPL is set to begin on January 9, with Mumbai Indians returning as defending champions.
