New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner believes there is no tougher or more valuable preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026 than taking on India in their own conditions, with the global event set to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
After being comprehensively outplayed in the first three matches of the series, the Kiwis rediscovered their rhythm by defeating the reigning world champions for the first time in Visakhapatnam, registering a commanding 50-run victory in the fourth T20I on Wednesday.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Santner said the series had tested his side in every aspect of the game, regardless of the results.

“I said at the start of the series that there’s no better preparation for a World Cup than playing India in India, irrespective of outcomes,” Santner said. “We’ve been tested heavily, earlier in the series and again tonight.”
Santner added that experiences gained in high-pressure situations against a top side like India could prove decisive should the two teams meet again at the T20 World Cup.
“It’s about learning, putting players into specific roles and seeing how they respond under pressure,” he said. “If we face India again in a World Cup, which is very possible, those experiences are invaluable.”
The turnaround in Visakhapatnam came after a bruising start to the tour, with India dominating the opening three matches across all departments. However, Santner views those difficult phases as essential building blocks rather than setbacks.
“Pressure situations are challenging, but they’re also where you grow,” he said. “It doesn’t get much harder than this.”
With a confidence-boosting win under their belt, New Zealand head into the final match of the series with renewed belief. Santner feels the side is now better prepared for the remainder of the tour and the bigger challenges that await in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.
