Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq’s unusual bowling action has become a major talking point in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026, drawing mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers alike. While many have questioned the legality of his action, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has come out in Tariq’s defence with a striking comparison.

Responding to a post by former India wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami on social media, Ashwin questioned why restrictions in cricket are applied more strictly to bowlers than batters.
Even football doesn’t allow players to pause during a penalty run-up anymore.

How is this ok? Action - all good. But pause ? That too while loading to deliver. This can’t be continued seriously ! #WorldCup2026 pic.twitter.com/gIgsjV7RlX
“Agree, football doesn’t allow it! While a batter can play a switch hit or reverse sweep without informing the umpire or bowler, after committing to bat from one side, why are the restrictions limited to the bowler?” Ashwin wrote.
He further pointed out that bowlers are not even allowed to change the arm with which they bowl without informing the umpire, calling for a rethink of the existing rules.
“In fact, the bowler isn’t allowed to change the arm with which he or she bowls without informing the umpire. They should first change that rule,” Ravichandran Ashwin added.
Tariq delivered an impressive spell against the USA on Tuesday, finishing with figures of 3 for 27 in his four overs and playing a key role in Pakistan’s victory. However, his bowling action has been under scrutiny on multiple occasions in the past. Similar concerns were raised during his stint in the Pakistan Super League, while Australia all-rounder Cameron Green had also previously voiced his discomfort with the action.
Pakistan have made a strong start to their T20 World Cup campaign, winning both their group-stage matches so far. They began with a victory over the Netherlands before registering a comprehensive win against the USA.
With momentum on their side, the Men in Green will now face arch-rivals India on February 15 in Colombo, in what promises to be one of the marquee clashes of the tournament.
