Without Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans stumbled during their match against the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. Hosted in Ahmedabad, they chased 211 but couldn’t reach it. That loss marked their second this season. His absence weakened the opening slot sharply. Leadership felt thinner without him around.

Without Gill around, Rashid Khan took over as captain, later explaining in the opener that Shubman Gill had been sidelined by a muscle spasm. Hopeful tones came from the temporary leader, suggesting the issue wouldn’t linger long. Next up for GT is Delhi Capitals on April 8, with the camp watching closely, expecting their main captain back soon if things go smoothly.

April 8 brings GT's upcoming game against the Delhi Capitals. Hoping for good news soon, Parthiv Patel. Gujarat Titans’ assistant coach says Gill might be back faster than expected.

"Obviously, he had a neck sprain (during the India vs South Africa Test in November 2025), and he had a spasm a couple of days back. We are hoping he's fit for the upcoming game. It doesn't look that serious. Injury management is not my forte, but I can definitely tell you that he should be fine," Parthiv Patel said.

Back then, Matthew Hayden, Gujarat Titans’ batting coach, spoke about Shubman Gill’s shift in mindset, noting how calm decisions and quiet strength lifted his game; he called it rare for someone so young. His presence now carries more weight, less noise. That kind of maturity doesn’t rush in; it settles.

"Yeah, see, Shubman is a very clear thinker of the game, and that shows he understands cricket very well, especially at the highest level and in Test cricket," Hayden said. "He brings a lot of confidence. If you like, he brings a bit of swagger of the modern generation, which I really enjoy-that feeling that he's in control and shaping his own destiny.

"But any side he plays for, he very unselfishly says-and I've watched him across many press conferences like this-that it's very team-oriented," the former opener said on Monday.
