Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has made a massive revelation regarding the former India captain’s possible return to Test cricket, sparking fresh speculation among fans.

Kohli, who retired from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, brought an end to one of the most celebrated red-ball careers in modern cricket. His decision came as a major surprise to the cricketing fraternity, especially considering his impact on India’s dominance in the format over the last decade.

While Kohli had struggled for consistency in the final phase of his Test career, his retirement still marked the end of a golden era for Indian cricket.

Rajkumar Sharma reveals conversations with Virat Kohli regarding Test comeback

In a conversation with Express Café, Rajkumar Sharma opened up on the discussions surrounding Kohli’s possible return to the longest format.

“Many people have told me to ask Virat to return to Test cricket because he listens to you,” Rajkumar said.

When asked whether he personally spoke to Kohli about a comeback, the veteran coach admitted that conversations are indeed taking place.

“We are talking about it; let’s see what happens.”

The remarks have now reignited speculation over whether Kohli could reconsider his retirement from Test cricket in the future, despite previously indicating that he had moved on from the format.

Kohli’s Test legacy remains one of Indian cricket’s finest eras

Virat Kohli’s captaincy era is often regarded as one of the golden periods in Indian Test cricket history. Under his leadership, Team India did not lose a single Test series at home and emerged as a dominant force overseas as well.

Apart from the final couple of post-COVID years, Kohli’s individual numbers in the format also remained extraordinary. In 123 Test matches, he scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

One of the standout moments of his captaincy career came during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018-19, where Kohli led India to their first-ever Test series victory on Australian soil.

However, Kohli’s performances dipped slightly after the COVID era and he struggled to maintain the same level of consistency. Following disappointing series against New Zealand ,he also endured a difficult BGT 2024-25, which eventually became one of the major reasons behind his retirement from Test cricket.

Still, Kohli has repeatedly hinted in the past that he has no intention of making a comeback to the format. But with Rajkumar Sharma’s latest remarks, fresh speculation around a possible return has once again started building within the cricketing world.
