15-year-old wonder boy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is showing no signs of slowing down in Indian Premier League as the left-hander achieved yet another major feat in his short but scintillating career.

In a high-pressure chase of 221, with Rajasthan Royals’ qualification hopes at stake, Vaibhav fell just short of a well-deserved century. He was dismissed for a sensational 93 off just 38 deliveries, smashing 7 fours and 10 sixes at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 244.74.

That innings also took him to a special landmark, as he became the first Indian player to hit 50 sixes in an IPL season. He now sits second on the all-time list, behind only Chris Gayle.

With RR still having one league match left against Mumbai Indians, the teenage sensation is firmly on track to break Gayle’s long-standing record.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s six-hitting spree puts Chris Gayle’s iconic record under threat

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi now has 53 sixes in IPL 2026 and needs just seven more to surpass Gayle’s record of 59, set in 2012. With his fearless style and RR still alive in the playoff race, the milestone is well within reach.

Most sixes in an IPL season:

  • Chris Gayle – 59 (2012)
  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – 53* (2026)
  • Andre Russell – 52 (2019)
  • Chris Gayle – 51 (2013)
  • Jos Buttler – 45 (2022)
  • Chris Gayle – 44 (2011)
  • Abhishek Sharma – 42 (2024)

RR’s top order fires as Vaibhav and Jaiswal set the platform in chase

Earlier in the game, Lucknow Super Giants posted a massive 220/5 in the first innings, powered by a brilliant 96 from Mitchell Marsh, with solid support from Josh Inglis, who scored 56.

RR came out with intent in the chase and their opening duo immediately took control. Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the side a flying start with 43 off 23 deliveries, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi kept the momentum going with his aggressive strokeplay.

The pair made the chase look manageable right from the start and gave RR the launchpad they desperately needed in such a crucial game.

The decisive moment came later when Dhruv Jurel and Saurabh Vajpayee stitched together a game-changing 105-run partnership in just 45 deliveries.

Their stand turned the chase into a near cakewalk and pushed RR to the brink of a massive victory. If Rajasthan complete the chase, they will move right into serious contention for fourth place and strengthen their playoff chances significantly.

Their final league match is against MI on May 24, a contest that could ultimately decide their season. With Vaibhav in this kind of form, RR will believe they have every chance of sealing a playoff berth.
