Suryakumar Yadav's future as India’s T20I captain has reportedly become uncertain after a prolonged dip in batting form. The national selection committee is not fully convinced that he currently deserves a place in the XI purely as a batter, making his leadership role a major talking point before India’s next T20I assignment.
According to a PTI report, the debate has moved beyond captaincy alone and into a harder selection question: if Suryakumar Yadav is not an automatic pick as a batter, can he continue to lead the side?
Gautam Gambhir likely to have final say
According to the PTI report, head coach Gautam Gambhir could have the decisive say on Suryakumar's future as T20I captain.
The report states that while the selectors are leaning towards moving on from Suryakumar Yadav, Gautam Gambhir's comfort with him remains important because the BCCI hierarchy values the coach-captain equation in the dressing room.
Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav share a strong bond from their Kolkata Knight Riders days. Gautam Gambhir was also the one who gave him the nickname 'SKY'. Their equation has remained warm, which could complicate a straightforward selection call.
Gambhir is not seen as a ceremonial head coach either. Those familiar with his working style believe he usually has a strong voice in cricketing decisions. If he backs Suryakumar Yadav, the selectors may delay the captaincy change. If he agrees with Ajit Agarkar’s panel, India could move quickly towards a new T20I leader.
Selectors concerned over Suryakumar Yadav's T20 form
Suryakumar Yadav has struggled for form for nearly a year, and IPL 2026 has made the concern sharper. He scored only 210 runs from 12 innings at a strike rate of 148, but the more worrying number is his average, which stayed below 18.
A senior BCCI source told PTI that selectors had hoped the IPL would help him rediscover rhythm.
'Initially the selectors thought that IPL would help Suryakumar Yadav regain form like last edition when he crossed 700 runs. But strangely there hasn't been any technical course correction in his game,' the source said.
The source added that bowlers have found a simple plan against him.
'Even the rookiest of pacers are just bowling straight hard lengths and he has no answer. Selectors don't see him playing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is as simple as that,' the source told PTI.
That is why the captaincy question has become uncomfortable. As the source put it: 'If someone can't earn his place as a batter, how can he be a leader? Hence it is difficult to retain him but Ajit (Agarkar) and Gautam Gambhir need to be on same page.'
Shreyas, Gill and Tilak in succession race
If India move on from Suryakumar, Shreyas Iyer remains one of the strongest contenders. He brings tactical sharpness, IPL leadership experience and a strong personality. However, the PTI report notes that his working equation with Gambhir could be a question, especially after KKR’s 2024 IPL title was widely projected as Gambhir’s success as mentor despite Iyer being captain.
Shubman Gill is also firmly in the conversation. He was previously viewed by Ajit Agarkar's panel as a long-term all-format leader before a dip in form ahead of the T20 World Cup slowed that plan. His strong IPL 2026 season as Gujarat Titans captain has lifted his stock again.
Tilak Varma is another name quietly gaining ground. The BCCI source told PTI: 'Don't rule out Tilak if Surya is sacked. There's a reason that Tilak has been made captain for tri-nation A series where selectors would get to see his leadership skills.'
India are also tracking teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in mind, adding another layer to the long-term succession debate.
For now, Suryakumar's captaincy is in limbo. His World Cup success still carries weight, but his batting form has weakened his case. The selectors may be ready for a change, but the final decision could depend on whether the head coach still believes SKY deserves one more run.
