NEW DELHI: Suryakumar Yadav reflected on India’s 51 run loss to South Africa in the second T20I in Mullanpur and said the team fell short in key moments with both bat and ball.
He admitted that the early collapse hurt the chase badly and the senior players did not shoulder enough responsibility to stabilise the innings.
Suryakumar said in the post match presentation ceremony that India needed more intent and clarity at the top.
“I think myself and Shubman, we could have given a good start. We can’t rely on Abhishek all the time. The way he has been batting, he might have an off day too. Me and Shubman should have taken charge right from the beginning.”
Top order needed to bat deeper
He said the innings lost shape once Gill fell first ball and Suryakumar himself failed to steady the middle.
“Me, Shubman and a few other batters should have taken it and batted deeper. Shubman got out on the first ball but I should have taken that responsibility. I should have batted a little deeper and made it a smart chase.”
Team failed to adapt to conditions
Suryakumar admitted the bowlers did not read the surface quickly and stuck to one plan even when dew became a factor.
“They realised how important the lengths were on this wicket. It’s a learning process. There was a little bit of dew as well. If something wasn’t working, we should have gone to a second plan but we didn’t. As I said, we learn and move forward.”
