The strange bat deflection incident became a major talking point on social media during the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026 on Sunday, April 5.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India after the incident that took place during the match, as per cricbuzz.

What exactly happened?

There were strong reactions online, with some claiming that SRH should’ve been awarded five penalty runs since Avesh Khan was guilty of violating Law 20.1 (Dead Ball) and Law 41 (Unfair Play).

What do the laws say?

There were discussions around whether this act should have resulted in a penalty. Some fans pointed to laws on dead ball and unfair play, suggesting that SRH could have been awarded extra runs.

But in this situation, those laws cannot be applied. Pant had already cleared the fielder, and the ball was going towards the boundary. Avesh’s action was not seen as stopping a fielder from completing a play or interfering in an unfair way. Hence, no penalty was awarded.

Ordinary batting cost Sunrisers Hyderabad

In a low-scoring encounter in Hyderabad, Rishabh Pant powered LSG to a win in a last-over finish. Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 156 for 9 on the board. It was a disciplined bowling performance from Lucknow as they never allowed SRH batters to settle.

However, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy played important knocks that helped the team reach a competitive total.

In reply, LSG’s batting looked quite ordinary, but Pant held his nerve till the final over and finished the game under pressure. Meanwhile, the LSG captain was also criticized for not finishing the game earlier as he struggled for big shots throughout the game at Rajiva Gandhi International Stadium.

Earlier, Mohammed Shami produced one of his best spells in IPL by taking two wickets for nine in four overs. His spell earned him the Player of the Match award over Rishabh Pant
