In a rare show of cross-border unity, several legendary international cricket captains, including Indian icons Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev have formally appealed to the Government of Pakistan to ensure humane treatment for jailed former Pakistan captain and ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The 14-member group, which also includes Australian great Greg Chappell, has called for “fair and humane treatment” for the 1992 World Cup-winning skipper amid growing concerns about his deteriorating health in custody. Recent reports suggest Khan has complained of worsening vision problems while in prison.

The appeal has been addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and stresses that the plea is rooted not in politics, but in “the spirit of sportsmanship and common humanity.”

Gavaskar, who shared a fierce on-field rivalry with Khan, spoke candidly about his long-time contemporary.

“It’s terrible what they are doing to him. We have been friends since he was trying to qualify as an overseas player for Worcestershire and not just rivals on the field,” Gavaskar said.

The joint statement

In a strongly worded joint statement, the former captains expressed “deep concern” over reports about Khan’s incarceration conditions.

They described him as a “distinguished former Captain of Pakistan and a legendary figure in world cricket,” highlighting his leadership during Pakistan’s historic triumph at the 1992 Cricket World Cup.

The statement emphasised that, regardless of political differences, Khan remains a democratically elected former national leader and one of the finest all-rounders the game has produced.

The group urged Pakistani authorities to ensure:

Immediate and continued medical treatment from qualified specialists of his choosing

Humane and dignified detention conditions in line with international standards

Regular family access

Fair and transparent legal proceedings without undue delay

“Cricket has long been a bridge between nations,” the statement read. “Rivalry ends when the stumps are drawn — and respect endures.”

What happened to Imran Khan?

According to recent media reports, Khan may be shifted to a hospital amid mounting health concerns. The former Pakistan captain has reportedly been held in solitary confinement since September 2023. Allegations suggest that repeated medical complaints were ignored for months, leading to a decline in his condition.

Last week, former Pakistan cricketers — including Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, also urged authorities to ensure he receives “the best possible medical care.”

The appeal from global cricketing figures underscores how Khan’s legacy as a sporting icon continues to command respect beyond political and national boundaries.
