CSK are heading into their IPL 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk with momentum, but also with familiar uncertainty around MS Dhoni. CSK are sixth on the table with five wins from 10 matches and still very much in the playoff race. Their recent win over Delhi Capitals gave them confidence, with Sanju Samson producing a superb unbeaten 87 and the spin pair of Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein controlling the game beautifully. But with only four league matches left, the Dhoni question remains alive. He has started training, but there is still no firm update on his match availability, so CSK’s strongest XI for the LSG game is likely to be built without him. Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad remain CSK's best top-order pair Sanju Samson has become the most important batter in this CSK line-up. The numbers tell the story clearly: when Samson has batted beyond the powerplay, Chennai have won all four matches. When he has failed to survive the first six overs, CSK have won only once in six games. That shows how heavily their batting depends on his tempo and control. Samson has scored 402 runs in 10 matches this season, including two centuries and a half-century. His unbeaten 87 against Delhi Capitals was exactly the kind of innings CSK needed in a chase: calm at the start, authoritative later, and decisive at the finish. Ruturaj Gaikwad has not been as explosive, but his 251 runs in 10 games still give CSK a reliable presence at the top. As captain, his job is not only to score but also to give the innings shape. Against LSG’s strong bowling attack, Gaikwad and Samson will need to prevent early damage. Urvil Patel likely to get another chance Urvil Patel is one of the more fascinating names in this CSK XI. His results have not fully arrived yet, but his intent is impossible to miss. He has a balls-per-boundary ratio of 2 in the IPL, with 10 sixes and eight fours from only 56 balls. That tells you exactly how he wants to play: attack almost every ball and force the opposition to react. The risk is obvious. He can fall early and leave CSK exposed. But in a season where both CSK and LSG have struggled to score at the pace other teams are managing, Urvil’s aggression is worth backing for another game. If he faces 20 balls, he could change the shape of the innings completely. Middle order still needs a complete performance CSK’s middle order has been mixed this season. Kartik Sharma has 153 runs in seven matches and has looked better after returning to the XI. His recent performances suggest he deserves to continue, especially after giving Samson useful support in the win over DC. Dewald Brevis is under pressure. He has managed only 64 runs in four innings and has not yet delivered the kind of impact CSK would have expected. But his talent is not in question. CSK may give him another game because one good knock could unlock the power they badly need in the middle order. Shivam Dube should also return to the XI or be used as the Impact Player. Even if his season has been inconsistent, he remains CSK’s most dangerous hitter against spin. Against LSG, that could matter. If Lucknow use spin through the middle overs, Dube is the one player who can disrupt their plans quickly. Jamie Overton gives CSK balance Jamie Overton has been one of CSK’s most valuable players this season because he offers balance in both departments. He has scored 136 runs in six innings and taken 11 wickets, which makes him a proper all-round option rather than just a supporting player. In a match where both teams have strong bowling attacks and slightly unreliable batting units, Overton’s role becomes even more important. He can finish innings, bowl hard lengths, and give Gaikwad flexibility with match-ups. That makes him almost certain to keep his place. Spin twins could be crucial at Chepauk Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein should be central to CSK's bowling plan. In the previous match, they worked beautifully together, choking Delhi Capitals and forcing them into a below-par total. At Chepauk, especially in an afternoon game, spin could once again be the route to control. Noor has taken 11 wickets in 10 matches, while Akeal has seven wickets in five games. Their value is not only in wickets but also in squeezing the scoring rate. Against an LSG batting unit that has struggled for tempo this season, CSK will want to use spin to create pressure in the middle overs. Anshul Kamboj leads the pace attack Anshul Kamboj has been CSK's standout bowler this season. With 17 wickets in 10 matches, he is among the leading wicket-takers in IPL 2026 and has given Chennai a genuine strike option despite the absence of a superstar pace name. Mukesh Choudhary should partner him in the pace department. He has played only four games, but his left-arm angle gives CSK variety. Gurjapneet Singh is another option and could come in as an Impact Player depending on conditions, especially if Chennai want an extra seamer. Will MS Dhoni play vs LSG? As things stand, MS Dhoni is unlikely to play against LSG. He has resumed training and has been seen in the nets, but there is still no official confirmation that he is match-ready. With CSK still fighting for a playoff place, the management may not want to disturb the balance unless Dhoni is fully fit. The emotional pull of a Dhoni return at Chepauk is huge, especially with time running out if this is indeed his farewell season. But from a cricketing point of view, CSK’s best XI right now looks more settled without forcing a late change. Why this is CSK's best XI This XI gives Chennai their best mix of form, balance and conditions-based strength. Samson and Gaikwad provide the top-order base, Urvil brings high-risk power, Kartik and Brevis offer middle-order options, Dube gives spin-hitting muscle, and Overton balances the side as an all-rounder. The bowling is where CSK look strongest. Noor, Akeal, Kamboj and Mukesh give them wicket-taking options across phases, while Gurjapneet or Prashant Veer can be used tactically through the Impact Player rule. CSK's batting still has questions, but their bowling attack is good enough to win games at Chepauk. Against LSG, the safest route is clear: let Samson bat deep, trust the spinners, and avoid unnecessary selection experiments unless Dhoni is fully ready.
