After India’s dominant 4-1 series win over New Zealand, former England captain Michael Vaughan confidently named the Men in Blue among his favourites for the upcoming World Cup. Alongside India, Vaughan backed England, New Zealand, and Australia to reach the semi-finals, leaving out South Africa, who had reached the finals in the previous edition but lost to India.
“My 4 T20 World Cup semi-finalists will be … India, England, NZ & Australia …” Vaughan wrote on X. India, the defending champions, will aim to become the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times. England and the West Indies both have two titles each, while New Zealand and Australia will be looking to add to their silverware.
Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy since mid-2024, India has remained unbeaten in bilateral series, including their recent 4-1 victory over the Black Caps at home. India are drawn in Group A with Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA. Australia are in Group B alongside Oman, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka. England, led by Harry Brook, are in Group C with the West Indies, Scotland, Nepal, and Italy. New Zealand face a challenging Group D with Afghanistan, South Africa, the UAE, and Canada.
Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage. The tournament follows the same format as the previous edition in 2024. The T20 World Cup 2026 begins on Saturday, February 7, with three matches scheduled for the opening day: Pakistan vs. Netherlands in Colombo, West Indies vs. Scotland in Kolkata, and defending champions India vs. USA in Mumbai.
