Ganguly Questions Sundar’s No. 3 Role
Former India captain and current Cricket Association of Bengal president, Sourav Ganguly, expressed doubts about Washington Sundar’s suitability for the No. 3 spot in Test cricket across challenging overseas conditions.
“Washington Sundar is a talented all-rounder, he bowls well and can bat, but I am not sure No. 3 is the right long-term position for him, especially in countries like England, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand,” Ganguly said in an interview with India Today.
He emphasised that India’s top five batters – the openers and those at No. 3, 4, and 5 – should be specialists capable of performing consistently in any conditions.
“Your top five must be reliable specialists, and I am not convinced Washi can handle No. 3 in all conditions. That is something the team management, led by Gautam, needs to decide,” he added.
With the second Test beginning on November 22 at Barsapara Stadium, India will be looking to bounce back and level the series.
