Mumbai Indians' difficult IPL 2026 season has now produced a rare captaincy record. With Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav unavailable for the match against Punjab Kings in Dharamshala, MI got a third captain this season in form of champion pacer Jasprit Bumrah
That puts them in a very small group of IPL teams who have used three captains in a single edition. Even more notably, MI become the first side in IPL history to be led by three Indian captains in one season: Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah
Teams led by 3 captains in one IPL season
- Mumbai Indians in 2008: Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Sachin Tendulkar
- Pune Warriors India in 2013: Angelo Mathews, Ross Taylor, Aaron Finch
- Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021: David Warner, Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey
- Punjab Kings in 2024: Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma
- Mumbai Indians in 2026: Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah or Tilak Varma
MI's 2026 case is different because all three leaders are Indian. In earlier examples, teams usually had a mix of Indian and overseas captains due to injury, form issues, bans or international commitments.
Why Mumbai Indians have needed three captains In IPL 2026
Hardik Pandya started the season as Mumbai Indians captain but has missed recent matches due to back spasms. He has not yet been fully cleared by the medical team despite training away from the squad.
Suryakumar Yadav then stepped in as stand-in captain and led MI in Hardik’s absence. But he is also unlikely to play against PBKS after recently becoming a father, with MI understood to have given him time away from the squad.
That leaves Mumbai needing another leader. Rohit Sharma is still in the XI and is a five-time IPL-winning captain, but reports suggest MI are unlikely to hand the role back to him for this match. Bumrah, the senior-most long-term MI figure, and Tilak, a future leadership option, are the leading candidates.

Captaincy instability usually tells a bigger story
Using three captains in one IPL season is rarely a sign of a smooth campaign. It usually happens when injuries, tactical problems or dressing-room uncertainty pile up at the same time.
In 2008, Mumbai had Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock and Sachin Tendulkar leading at different points because of injury and disciplinary issues. Harbhajan was banned after the infamous Slapgate incident, while Tendulkar missed the start due to injury.
Pune Warriors in 2013 rotated through Angelo Mathews, Ross Taylor and Aaron Finch during a poor season where nothing settled. Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021 moved from David Warner to Kane Williamson and then Manish Pandey after form and injury issues. Punjab Kings in 2024 used Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma because of injury and overseas availability.
For MI in 2026, the reasons are different but the message is similar. Hardik’s injury, SKY’s personal leave, and the team’s poor campaign have combined to create a leadership shuffle at the wrong end of the season.
A symbol of MI's chaotic IPL 2026 season
Mumbai Indians are already out of the playoff race, so the third-captain development will not change their tournament fate. But symbolically, it captures their season quite neatly. A side that started with big names and high expectations has ended up near the bottom, searching for leadership stability in the final stretch.
If Bumrah leads, MI will be leaning on experience and loyalty. He has been with the franchise since 2013 and has captained India before. If Tilak gets the role, it would feel like a glimpse into the future.
Either way, MI’s entry into this rare list is not the kind of record they would have wanted. Three captains in one season usually means the campaign has not gone to plan. In Mumbai’s case, IPL 2026 has not just gone off script; it has been rewriting scenes in real time.
