Jamie Overton's injury has arrived at a painful time for Chennai Super Kings.

The England all rounder has been ruled out of IPL 2026 with a right thigh injury and has returned to the UK for further assessment, just days after producing a Player of the Match spell against Lucknow Super Giants. Chennai face LSG again on May 15 at the Ekana Stadium, and this is not a gentle selection headache.

Chennai are fifth with 12 points from 11 matches, still alive in the playoff race, and now have to replace a player who gave them wickets, balance and lower-order cover. LSG may be eliminated, but CSK cannot treat this like a casual Friday outing. This is the sort of game where one wrong team call can turn playoff hope into group-stage archaeology.

LSG vs CSK: 3 players who can replace Jamie Overton in Chennai's XI at Ekana

1. Matt Henry: The safest and most match-ready option

If Chennai want the least risky replacement, Matt Henry is the obvious choice. He is the only realistic option from the bench who has already played this IPL season, featuring in three matches and taking two wickets. The economy rate has been expensive, especially at the death, but at least he has match rhythm.

Henry does not replace Overton’s batting depth, and that is the problem. Overton was not just a bowler; he was an all rounder who helped CSK stretch their XI. But at Ekana, where the pitch can offer seam movement and grip, Henry’s new-ball and hard-length bowling could still be valuable.

The logic is simple: Chennai need control, not experiments. If Ruturaj Gaikwad wants someone who has actually bowled under IPL 2026 pressure, Henry should play. He may not be glamorous, but sometimes a playoff chase needs a sensible pair of shoes more than fireworks.

2. Zak Foulkes: The closest like-for-like backup

Zak Foulkes is the most natural like-for-like option for Overton because he is a pace-bowling all-rounder. CSK bought him as cover for that role, and with Overton gone, this is exactly the kind of situation where Foulkes enters the conversation.

The catch is obvious: he has not played a single match this season. That means picking him against LSG would be a leap of faith. But tactically, he gives CSK the profile they are losing: a seam option who can bat lower down the order and prevent the XI from becoming too bowler-heavy.

If CSK believe Ekana will not be a pure pace-bowling surface and want to preserve batting depth, Foulkes could be the bold pick. He may not have Overton's experience, but he fits the shape of the vacancy better than a specialist bowler. This would be a classic CSK move: back the role, trust the player, and hope the internet apologises later. It rarely does, but still.

3. Dian Forrester: The Jamie Overton's replacement in CSK

Dian Forrester is the official replacement for Overton, joining CSK for INR 75 lakh. The South African all-rounder is match-fit, has recent international exposure, and brings power-hitting ability. On paper, he gives CSK a fresh all-round option at exactly the right time.

But there is a timing issue. He has only just joined the squad, and throwing him straight into a must win IPL game would be aggressive even by T20 standards. He has zero IPL experience and may not have had enough time to understand CSK’s plans, match-ups or role clarity.

Still, Forrester is intriguing. If CSK want an X factor pick and feel they need someone who can replace Overton’s all-round value more directly, he is a tempting option. But for the LSG match specifically, he feels more like a bench watch than an automatic starter.

What about Spencer Johnson?

Spencer Johnson is another name in the squad, but he is not the cleanest Overton replacement. He joined CSK earlier as Nathan Ellis’ injury replacement and has not played a game this season. He has also reportedly been managed carefully after fitness concerns.

Johnson gives left arm pace and high velocity, which is always attractive, especially on a surface with bounce. But he does not solve the batting-depth issue. If CSK pick him, they are replacing Overton the bowler, not Overton the all-rounder. That may work only if they are confident their top seven can carry the runs.

Who should replace Jamie Overton for LSG vs CSK?

For the May 15 game against Lucknow Super Giants, Matt Henry looks like the safest choice because he has already played this season and can slot into the bowling role immediately. Zak Foulkes is the better like-for-like option if Chennai want all round balance. Dian Forrester is the exciting wildcard, but he may need a little more time before being thrown into a must-win match.

Best order of preference:

  1. Matt Henry
  2. Zak Foulkes
  3. Dian Forrester

CSK's bowling still has quality through Noor Ahmad, Akeal Hosein, Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary, but Overton’s absence hurts their flexibility. Against LSG at Ekana, Chennai need a practical call more than a dramatic one. For now, Henry feels like the grown up decision. Foulkes is the fun one. Forrester is the mystery box, and CSK may not want to open it with their playoff race still wobbling on the table.
