Former India skipper MS Dhoni made a surprise appearance at the JSCA International Stadium Complex on Thursday, February 19. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who now features only in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was warmly greeted by members of the Tripura women’s cricket team, who gathered around him for autographs and photographs.

The Ranchi-born legend, currently training ahead of IPL 2026, appeared relaxed as he patiently signed memorabilia and interacted with the players. Several cricketers seized the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to click pictures with him, while Dhoni also exchanged a few words with stadium staff before leaving the venue.

Eyes on another IPL crown?

Widely regarded as one of India’s most successful captains, Dhoni is also the joint-most successful skipper in IPL history alongside Rohit Sharma. He is set to don the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) jersey once again in what is being speculated as his final season.

The upcoming edition will mark the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain after he missed a major part of last season due to an elbow injury, which had prompted Dhoni to step back into the leadership role for the Yellow Army.

For IPL 2026, Dhoni is also expected to play a significant mentoring role. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently highlighted his impact on young players, noting that cricketers — both from CSK and opposing teams — often spend considerable time with Dhoni after matches seeking advice, something that continues to benefit emerging talent.
