Australia have been dealt a major blow in the ongoing Ashes series, with experienced pacer Josh Hazlewood officially ruled out due to an Achilles injury. Head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the right-arm quick, who already missed the opening two Tests, will not take part in the remainder of the series.

Josh Hazlewood out of Ashes, eyes now on World Cup

Speaking to media on Tuesday, McDonald revealed that Hazlewood's latest injury was unrelated to the hamstring issue that kept him out of the Perth and Adelaide Tests.

"Unfortunately, Josh won't be a part of the Ashes. We're really flat for him. We expected him to play a major role, but he’s had a couple of setbacks," McDonald said. "This injury is separate, lower calf, around the Achilles. His focus will now shift to World Cup preparation, which is crucial for us."

Pat Cummins likely to return for Adelaide Test

McDonald also confirmed that regular captain Pat Cummins is set to return for the third Test in Adelaide, having been given extended recovery time from his recent back trouble. The think tank initially considered playing Cummins in the pink-ball Test in Brisbane, but opted against rushing him back.

"His body’s ready, and unless something happens in the next week, I expect Pat to be out there tossing the coin," McDonald added.

Australia currently lead the five-match Ashes series 2-0, dominating both opening Tests. The third Test begins December 17 at Adelaide Oval, where England desperately need a win to stay alive and avoid a one-sided result.
