Every time Chennai Super Kings look like a complete side, the very next game they struggle to keep things going. The same was on display in their clash against Gujarat Titans, where CSK got off to a terrible start and ended up registering an unwanted batting record.
Sluggish start for Chennai Super Kings vs Gujarat Titans
After being invited to bat first, CSK were under pressure right from the very first over of Mohammed Siraj. The batters were unable to time the ball and found it difficult to score, and that pressure quickly led to wickets, resulting in a collapse in the powerplay itself.
After Sanju Samson departed for just 11 runs off 15 deliveries, CSK lost four quick wickets. Urvil Patel, Sarfaraz Khan and Dewald Brevis all went out cheaply, leaving the side reeling early in the innings.
It was Kagiso Rabada who did the early damage with two crucial wickets, while Siraj and Manav Suthar chipped in with one each.
Unwanted record for CSK
It took CSK 11.6 overs to reach the 50-run mark, which is their second slowest team fifty in the history of the IPL. Their slowest came back in 2011 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where they reached the milestone in 12.1 overs.
A similar story so far in IPL 2026
CSK came into this clash on the back of a brilliant performance against Mumbai Indians, where they crushed their arch-rivals by 103 runs. Sanju Samson led the charge with a sensational century in that game and was well supported by the rest of the unit.
However, their batting has been a major concern this season. Apart from Samson, none of the batters have been able to get going consistently. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has struggled for form, Sarfaraz Khan is yet to make a mark, and Shivam Dube, one of the key players in the lineup, has had a poor campaign so far.
It has largely been a case of Sanju Samson delivering or CSK ending up on the losing side. That has been the story so far, and they will need a much better effort from the batting unit going forward.
