NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India’s batting stalwarts, are facing questions over their roles in the national setup as the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup approaches. Concerns have been raised about how the duo can maintain form after long breaks from international cricket.

According to TOI, the meeting is likely to take place in Ahmedabad after the third ODI in Visakhapatnam. Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are expected to be part of the discussions.

A BCCI source said, “It is very important that players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature are given clarity about what is expected of them. They can’t just be playing with uncertainty.”

The board is reportedly planning a meeting with selectors and team management after the South Africa ODI series.

Clarity on roles and expectations

Rohit Sharma is expected to continue his aggressive approach at the top of the order. The board wants him to set an example for the younger players.

A source told TOI, “It is expected that he leads by example as a fearless batter. Conditions in Australia were challenging, but both Rohit and Kohli are expected to guide the younger batters around them.”

Game time outside international cricket is another point of focus. Participation in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy is being suggested to regain match sharpness.

Looking ahead to South Africa series

Despite the planning for the long term, Kohli and Rohit are expected to feature in India’s opening ODI against South Africa on November 30 in Ranchi. The first match of the three-game series will allow them to regain form and provide stability to the team.
