NEW DELHI: The Indian women’s cricket team stands on the verge of scripting history as they gear up to face South Africa in the final of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly ready to honour the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side with a record cash reward should they go on to win the trophy.

ICC Women's World Cup: Officials revealed for India vs South Africa final

In line with the “equal pay” principle championed by former BCCI secretary and current ICC chairman Jay Shah, the board is considering a prize amount on par with what the Rohit Sharma-led men’s team received after winning the T20 World Cup in the Americas last year. The men’s squad — including players and support staff — was awarded ₹125 crore for their title-winning campaign.

“The BCCI supports equal pay for men and women, and there are discussions that if our girls win the World Cup, the reward will match the men’s global triumph. But it isn’t right to make an announcement before they win the Cup,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Back in 2017, when India fell agonisingly short in the World Cup final against England at Lord’s, each player received ₹50 lakh as a gesture of appreciation. Eight years later, a World Cup victory could see the current stars earn a sum nearly ten times greater — a fitting recognition for a landmark achievement in Indian cricket.
