Roland Garros 2026 begins on May 24 and the withdrawal list heading into the second Grand Slam of the year is longer than anyone would have wanted.
The most significant absence is defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz whose wrist injury picked up at the Barcelona Open has ended his clay court season entirely and handed Jannik Sinner the status of overwhelming favourite to win the title of French Open. But Alcaraz is far from the only name missing from Paris. Here is the complete picture of every notable withdrawal across both the ATP and WTA draws.
Roland Garros: ATP withdrawals and the big names missing from the men's French Open draw
Carlos Alcaraz is the headline absence. The world number two and reigning Roland Garros champion sustained a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open that has been serious enough to rule him out for the remainder of the clay season.
He will be unable to defend the title he won last year after coming back from two sets down and saving three match points against Sinner in the final. His absence removes the one player most capable of stopping Sinner from adding the French Open to his run of five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.
Jack Draper is also out. The former British number one has been managing injury problems throughout 2026 and the latest setback is a knee issue also sustained at Barcelona. Draper had recovered from a left arm injury earlier in the season before the knee problem arrived and his participation in the grass court season at home will now be the focus for his recovery.
Lorenzo Musetti sustained a rectus femoris injury at the Italian Open and has withdrawn. His semi-final result from last year will not be defended and his 2026 season has been defined by inconsistency and physical setbacks.
Holger Rune is a longer-term absentee having been working his way back from a ruptured Achilles injury. He had been targeting a return at the Hamburg Open the week before Roland Garros but pulled out of both tournaments suggesting he is not yet ready for match play at the highest level.
Among the players who have withdrawn from qualifying Nicolas Jarry, who reached the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2023, and Luca Nardi who defeated Novak Djokovic at a Masters event, have both confirmed they will not participate.
Yoshihito Nishioka, Hugo Gaston who reached the last 16 in Paris in 2020, Titouan Droguet, Adam Walton, Arthur Gea, Clement Tabur, Nishesh Basavareddy, Carlos Taberner, Filip Misolic, Francesco Passaro, Felipe Meligeni Alves and Giulio Zeppieri have all withdrawn from qualifying for various reasons. Players including Thiago Seyboth Wild and Yosuke Watanuki have replaced several of them.
Arthur Fils and Joao Fonseca are also concerns heading into the tournament. Fils retired from the Italian Open with a hip problem and Fonseca has withdrawn from the Hamburg Open with a wrist issue making their participation at Roland Garros uncertain at the time of writing.
Roland Garros: WTA withdrawals and the women's French Open draw absences
Marketa Vondrousova headlines the WTA withdrawal list though the circumstances around her absence are different from the others. The 2022 Wimbledon champion has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency after missing three drug tests. She has not been competing for some time and her focus remains on her mental health and clearing her name before returning to the tour.
Sonay Kartal, British number two, has been out of action since sustaining a back injury at Indian Wells where she had reached the fourth round. She has not recovered in time for Roland Garros. Varvara Gracheva will also miss the tournament on home soil in Paris after suffering a devastating ACL injury during a practice session.
Among the longer-term absences Amanda Anisimova has a wrist injury and has not played on European clay this season with her last competitive match coming at the Miami Open.
Danielle Collins has not played at all in 2026 having spent the early part of the season working for Tennis Channel while recovering from injury and fertility treatments with no formal return timetable given. Victoria Azarenka posted her first social media message of 2026 after the Italian Open but has not played this season and her status for Roland Garros and beyond remains completely unknown.
