Liverpool's away woes continued with a heavy 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 8. The five-time champions, Barcelona, suffered a 0-2 loss against rivals Atletico Madrid at home, in another shock result in the UCL quarterfinals this season.
The Defending champions, PSG, dominated the Reds at the Parc des Princes, with Desire Doure and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring in each half. Arne Slot's men showed miserably against the French giants, with just 26% possession and failing to find a single shot on target.
After a shock Premier League defeat against Brighton away, Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City 0-4. Now another away loss, putting the six-time Champions League winners on the verge of UCL quarterfinal elimination. Slot is also facing the heat and is likely to say goodbye to his job if the Reds fail to overturn this defeat in the second leg at Anfield on April 14.
Meanwhile, in another UCL clash on Wednesday, Barcelona were stunned at Camp Nou. Centre-back Pau Cubarsi was sent off for his foul on Giuliano Simeone just before the halftime whistle. Julian Alvarez scored a sensational free-kick to give the Madrid side a 1-0 lead.
Alexander Sorloth extended the lead in the second half to guide Atletico Madrid to a 2-0 away win against the Spanish leaders. This was Atletico's first win in their last 25 games against Barcelona across competitions.
The Spanish champions had defeated Atletico Madrid in an all-important La Liga away game last week. They are leading Read Madrid by seven points in the Spanish league with eight games to go, but need a miracle to overcome Atletico in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal, scheduled on April 14.
Liverpool captain seeks redemption in the second-leg against PSG
Having already been knocked out of the FA Cup and the Premier League title race, Liverpool will look to salvage their 2025-26 season with some success in the Champions League. The most successful English club has nothing to lose this season and will look for a miracle at home in the second-leg against PSG.
Overturning a 0-2 goal deficit against the European champions will be an easy job for struggling Liverpool. However, the Reds have previously produced remarkable comebacks at Anfield and will take inspiration from that.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is also hoping for the same, as he talked about the home advantage in the second leg.
"We have to be absolutely spot on at Anfield," van Dijk said in the post-match interview. "Hopefully, our fans can play a big part in that. Our fans are the backbone of the club, and hopefully they can be there for us."
