Rajasthan Royals return to action after a stop-start couple of weeks, and the timing could hardly be more delicate. They have played only two matches in more than two weeks, lost both, and slipped outside the top four just when the playoff race has become properly crowded.
Sunday's clash against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium can change that quickly: if RCB beat PBKS and RR beat DC, Rajasthan can climb back into the playoff spots. But the selection picture is not completely straightforward.
Riyan Parag has been recovering from a hamstring niggle, while Nandre Burger’s recent expensive spells have made his place less secure. For RR, this is not just about picking names; it is about finding the XI that can survive Delhi's short boundaries and keep their playoff push alive.
Will Riyan Parag play against DC?
Riyan Parag has a decent chance of returning to the RR XII against Delhi Capitals. He missed Rajasthan’s previous match because of a hamstring niggle, but he has since been seen batting in the nets, which is usually a strong sign that the management are preparing him for a comeback.
His return would be huge for RR, not only because he is the captain, but also because his best innings of the season came against this same opponent. On May 1, Parag smashed 90 off 50 balls against Delhi and nearly doubled his season tally in one game. Before that, his season had been fairly quiet: 207 runs in 10 matches at an average of 23 and a strike rate of 143.
RR need him back because their middle order has looked less stable without him. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been giving explosive starts, but Rajasthan need someone to control the innings after the powerplay. Parag is not in peak form overall, but he knows this DC attack can be attacked. That matters.
If he is cleared fully, he should return at No. 4 and take back the captaincy. If RR decide not to risk him, Yashasvi Jaiswal could continue leading, but that would leave a major hole in the middle order.
Will Nandre Burger play against DC?
Nandre Burger's case is more complicated. Unlike Parag, this is not about fitness as much as form and conditions. Burger has had some strong moments this season, including 2 for 27 against LSG and 2 for 26 against CSK earlier in the campaign. But his last three outings have been rough.
He conceded 0 for 41 in three overs against DC, 1 for 59 in four overs against PBKS, and 0 for 50 in 3.3 overs against SRH. That is a serious leak, especially for a pacer expected to offer impact with the new ball and through the middle. His economy has ballooned badly in recent weeks, and Delhi is not exactly the easiest venue for a struggling fast bowler to rediscover control.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium has short boundaries and a quick outfield. If Burger misses his lengths, DC’s batters can punish him quickly. That is why RR may consider Adam Milne as an alternative, or use Burger through the Impact Player route depending on toss and match situation.
Still, Burger's left-arm angle and pace remain useful. If RR believe the pitch has enough carry or if they want to attack KL Rahul early, they may back him. But on current form, his spot is far less certain than Parag's.
RR Best XI vs DC
RR’s strongest XI should bring Parag back if he is fully fit, while keeping flexibility around the pace attack. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal should continue at the top. Sooryavanshi has been extraordinary, scoring 440 runs this season and hitting 40 sixes overall, including 30 in the powerplay. At a small ground like Delhi, his hitting could be decisive.
Jaiswal, however, needs runs. He started the season strongly with 183 runs in his first four innings at an average of 91.50, but has managed only 132 in his last seven at 18.90. His battle with Mitchell Starc will be spicy, especially after their history from the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
RR best predicted XII vs DC: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Riyan Parag (c), Donovan Ferreira, Shubham Dubey, Ravindra Jadeja, Jofra Archer, Ravi Bishnoi or Yash Raj Punja, Nandre Burger or Adam Milne, Brijesh Sharma, Tushar Deshpande.
If RR bat first, Shubham Dubey or Donovan Ferreira can be used depending on finishing needs. If they bowl first, Tushar Deshpande or Burger/Milne can come in as the Impact Player.
The call should be simple on Parag: play him if the hamstring is safe. The call on Burger should be harsher: pick him only if RR believe his pace and left-arm angle are worth the risk on a small ground. For now, Parag looks likely to return, while Burger is a genuine toss-up.
