Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter their IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians in a strong but slightly uneasy position. The Rajat Patidar-led side remains firmly in the playoff race, but two straight defeats have taken away some of the early-season control they had built.

Their batting, in particular, has looked less explosive without Phil Salt at the top, with Virat Kohli forced to carry more responsibility in the powerplay. RCB now face MI in Raipur on Sunday, May 10, at a venue returning to IPL action after a long gap. Ahead of this important fixture, Salt’s fitness and availability have become the biggest talking points for Bengaluru.

RCB vs MI: Phil Salt returns to India after finger injury scans

Phil Salt has returned to India after travelling back to England for medical scans on his injured finger. The England wicketkeeper-batter had suffered the injury while fielding during RCB’s match against Delhi Capitals, which forced him to miss recent games.

Former KKR director Joy Bhattacharya confirmed the update on Cricbuzz, saying, "From our production team to everyone is running after social media to see where is Phil Salt. So Phil Salt has arrived in India."

However, his return to India does not automatically mean he will play against Mumbai Indians. The key question is whether Salt can reach Raipur in time and whether RCB’s medical team clears him for match action. Bhattacharya added, “Will Salt move to Raipur or not is the question. If he reaches Raipur, I think if Phil Salt is there, it’ll give a huge boost to the team.”

RCB vs MI: Why Phil Salt's comeback could fix RCB's batting puzzle

Salt’s absence has hurt RCB’s powerplay batting. Before the injury, he had scored 202 runs in six innings at an average of 33.67 and a strike rate of 168.33. Those numbers show how much intent and tempo he gives Bengaluru at the top.

Jacob Bethell, who replaced Salt, has not been able to create the same impact. He has managed only 43 runs in four innings, leaving Kohli with too much work to do early in the innings. If Salt is fit, he should walk straight back into the opening slot and allow Kohli to play with more freedom.

His return could also affect the wicketkeeping equation. Jitesh Sharma has struggled with the bat this season, scoring only 64 runs in eight innings. RCB may consider using Phil Salt both as opener and wicketkeeper if Salt is fit enough to keep wickets, which could give them more flexibility in the XI.

RCB vs MI: Will Phil Salt play against Mumbai Indians?

As things stand, Salt is back in India, but his availability for the RCB vs MI match is not officially confirmed. His selection will depend on travel to Raipur, medical clearance and whether RCB feel he is ready to handle both batting and possibly wicketkeeping duties.

For RCB, the timing of his return is excellent. They have lost momentum after consecutive defeats, and a win over MI could strengthen their playoff push. Salt’s presence would bring back powerplay aggression, ease pressure on Kohli, and give Bengaluru a more settled look.

So the update is positive but not final: Phil Salt has returned to India, but RCB will take a late call on whether he plays against MI in Raipur.
