Chennai Super Kings will enter the Chepauk on Saturday, May 2, with a clear intention of keeping their IPL 2026 campaign alive against Mumbai Indians. But one question continues to dominate the build-up — will MS Dhoni finally return for this crucial clash?

The legendary figure has not featured in a single game so far this season, and with CSK fighting to stay in the playoff race, his availability could be a massive factor — not just for his finishing ability but also for his leadership presence.

MS Dhoni injury update: Calf issue delays comeback

There were encouraging signs recently as Dhoni was spotted regularly in practice sessions. However, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming revealed last week that Dhoni had tweaked his calf during a warm-up game, delaying his return further.

That update came as a setback for fans who were eagerly waiting to see the CSK icon back in action at Chepauk.

Batting coach Michael Hussey also shared a cautious but optimistic update on Dhoni’s recovery:

“M.S. is going really well. Hopefully, he’ll be back as soon as possible. I’m not sure if that will be tomorrow or the match after, but he’s progressing well.”

“Once he feels confident in his calf, I’m sure he’ll give the signal that he’s ready to go. At the moment, we’re guided by him. We’re waiting. I think all of Chennai is waiting,” he added.

As things stand, MS Dhoni is unlikely to feature in the CSK vs MI clash at Chepauk, although a final decision will depend on match-day fitness and his own assessment.

Chennai Super Kings predicted XI vs Mumbai Indians

In Dhoni’s absence, CSK are expected to stick with a stable combination that gave them success in a few matches.

The presence of Sanju Samson behind the stumps provides balance, while Ruturaj Gaikwad continues to lead the side. The middle order featuring Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis will be key, with the bowling attack relying on local talents.

CSK Predicted XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hosein, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh

Impact Player: Prashant Veer, Sarafaraz Khan
