Hardik Pandya trained at full intensity during Mumbai Indians' practice session on Monday May 19 and all the signs point toward a return for the KKR clash at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. He arrived relaxed, was among the first players off the team bus and went straight into an extended bowling and batting session at the nets. He bowled at full tilt and batted fluently according to reports from the session.
What Hardik Pandya has missed and why the back spasm lasted this long
Shardul Thakur had already indicated earlier that Pandya was likely to return for the Kolkata game. "He is now in Mumbai training. I am expecting him to return to action in Kolkata and play the game," Thakur said. Based on Monday's training update a return on Wednesday looks increasingly likely.
Pandya last played on May 2 in Mumbai's away game against CSK at Chepauk where he bowled two overs and scored 18 off 23 balls. He was then absent for the home game against LSG on May 4 with back spasms. He travelled to Raipur for the RCB game but did not play. He did not travel to Dharamsala for the PBKS game where Jasprit Bumrah captained the side after Suryakumar Yadav also missed out following the birth of his child.
Three games missed in total across a 17-day period. MI won two of those three games without him including the PBKS victory and the LSG game at the Wankhede which added a complicated dimension to the narrative around his absence.

The captaincy question and what his return means for MI's leadership
MI have used three captains this season. Hardik Pandya for the bulk of the campaign. Suryakumar Yadav as stand-in during Hardik's illness and injury period. Jasprit Bumrah for the PBKS game in Dharamsala.
With MI already eliminated from the playoffs the question of whether Pandya walks back into the captaincy for the final two games or whether the management uses this moment to trial a different leadership setup heading into 2027 is the most interesting decision the franchise faces before Wednesday. The team won comfortably without him in the final two victories and the optics of the situation are something MI's management will need to handle carefully.

The rumours around his future and why the KKR game carries weight beyond cricket
Pandya's absence generated significant speculation about his future at the franchise. He was photographed interacting with CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan which immediately fuelled transfer rumours. Reports have also linked him with a possible move to Delhi Capitals.
MI officials have not commented on any of this and it remains speculation but the timing of those stories alongside his poor IPL 2026 season has made his return for the final two games something beyond a routine fitness update. His numbers this season are the weakest of his IPL career. Four wickets at an economy close to 12. 146 runs at a strike rate of 136. MI have four wins from 12 games and sit in the bottom two of the table.
The final two games against KKR and RR cannot change the playoff picture but they will shape conversations about contracts, captaincy and squad building for IPL 2027. Pandya returning at Eden Gardens and producing a performance would matter for reasons that have nothing to do with the points table.
