Lucknow Super Giants have made two major calls for the CSK clash at Chepauk, leaving out Arshin Kulkarni and Mayank Yadav from the starting XI. On the surface, both decisions look slightly harsh, because Arshin is a young Indian batting option and Mayank is still one of the most exciting raw pace bowlers in the IPL.

But this is not a random benching. LSG are in a tight playoff race, Chepauk has had rain around, the pitch was under covers, and Rishabh Pant himself said he would have bowled first too. In that kind of game, teams usually stop experimenting and start choosing players they trust right now.

CSK vs LSG: Josh Inglis is back so Arshin Kulkarni had to move out

Arshin Kulkarni's absence is mostly about Josh Inglis returning to fitness. Arshin Kulkarni played the previous game because Inglis was dealing with a minor hand injury, but once Inglis became available, LSG were always likely to bring him straight back.

Inglis gives them a more experienced overseas batting option, better intent from the start, and extra stability in a line-up that already has Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant and Aiden Markram. In a must-win phase, that matters.

Arshin Kulkarni also did not help himself with his last innings against RCB, where he made 17 off 24 balls. That kind of knock can be forgiven if the team is cruising, but in a playoff race it looks like someone has put the innings on airplane mode.

LSG needed more tempo, more certainty and more power. Inglis offers that. So Arshin has not been dropped because the team has given up on him; he has been squeezed out because the senior option is fit again and the match situation demands faster batting.

CSK vs LSG: Mayank Yadav's pace has not been enough without control

Mayank Yadav is a more interesting case because everyone knows what he can bring. When he is fit and firing, he is not just quick, he is frighteningly quick. Batters do not line him up; they negotiate with him. But IPL cricket is cruel. If the speed gun looks beautiful and the scoreboard looks ugly, the scoreboard wins.

His recent numbers have hurt him badly. He conceded 56 runs in 4 overs against Rajasthan Royals and 50 runs in 4 overs against RCB, going wicketless in both games. That is not a small leak; that is the bowling equivalent of leavintg the tap open and going on vacation.

At Chepauk, especially with a pitch that may be tacky after being under covers, LSG probably wanted bowlers who could hit lengths, vary pace, and stay calm under pressure. Mayank Yadav still has the X-factor, but right now LSG seem to want control more than theatre.

CSK vs LSG: Avesh Khan's return changes the bowling equation

Rishabh Pant indicated at the toss that Avesh Khan is back, and that is important even though Avesh was listed on the bench along with Mayank Yadav. In the Impact Player era, the XI is not always the whole story. LSG can still bring in Avesh depending on how the game moves, especially when they come out to bowl.

Avesh gives them a more familiar IPL middle/death-overs option. He may not create the same excitement as Mayank, but he is more battle-hardened in these situations. Sometimes teams do not want the most dramatic bowler; they want the one who can bowl the boring 16th over and not turn it into a festival for the batting side. That is probably why Mayank is waiting on the bench rather than starting.
