Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bowl first against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in a crucial IPL 2026 encounter.

The clash carries massive importance for both teams. For CSK, it is a do-or-die contest as they look to keep their extremely slim playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile, a victory for GT would further strengthen their chances of securing a top-two finish heading into the playoffs.

CSK have made two changes to their playing XI. Akeal Hosein and Prashant Veer miss out, while Gurjapneet Singh and Matt Short come into the side.

On the other hand, GT have made one change, with Prasidh Krishna replacing spinner Sai Kishore in the playing XI.

GT vs CSK: Why Akeal Hosein is not playing

Akeal Hosein’s absence appears to be a tactical decision from CSK management considering the conditions at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Ahmedabad surface has often offered more assistance to pacers rather than spinners, and Chennai have adjusted their combination accordingly.

In his place, Gurjapneet Singh has been drafted into the XI to strengthen the pace department. The move is largely conditions-based as CSK look to maximise their bowling resources in a must-win clash.

With dew also expected to play a role later in the evening, Chennai’s decision to add another pacer instead of a spin-bowling option could prove crucial.

GT vs CSK: Why Prashant veer is not playing tonight

CSK have also decided to leave out Prashant Veer and bring in Australian all-rounder Matt Short for this important encounter.

Prashant Veer, who was bought for a massive ₹14.2 crore at the auction, has struggled to make a strong impact this season. The left-handed batter has not contributed consistently with either bat or ball, while his batting approach has at times looked sluggish in pressure situations.

As a result, CSK have opted for Matt Short, who brings greater flexibility to the side. The Australian all-rounder is known for his aggressive batting style and also has the ability to chip in with a few useful overs.

Both changes from CSK clearly indicate tactical adjustments based on conditions and team balance as the five-time champions attempt to keep their IPL 2026 campaign alive.
