Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, stated that his team did not capitalise during the final five overs of their batting innings, and this error was ultimately the reason for their loss to the Punjab Kings in their opening match of the IPL on Tuesday.

The Gujarat Titans achieved a total of 162/6 on a pitch that had initially suggested favourable batting conditions, although they possessed a strong batting order with players like Jos Buttler, Sai Sudharsan, and Glenn Phillips. Gill acknowledges that the pitch provided much more opportunity, and he thinks a score considerably over 200 was attainable.

"We believed we would score 210-220," Shubman Gill stated after having lost by three wickets, "and thought even 175 might be competitive; however, our team lost wickets at crucial points that left us with little momentum towards the end of the inning," Gill explained how striking a ball towards the end of an inning is difficult because the ball is no longer shiny.

"It is also much easier for a batsman to strike the ball when it is wet, thus making it impossible for bowlers to have a good grip on the ball; therefore, the batsman from Punjab had no problems playing their shots." Shubman Gill further elaborated that there was light rain during the second inning, which affected the ball.

"In the second inning, the ball did not have as much friction as in the first inning, and the batsmen from Punjab found it much easier to bat." Gill ended his statement by referring to his team as to how their performance was good overall, only that it was their turn not to win.

Punjab Kings’ captain Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, was all praise for young star Cooper Connolly, whose effortless 72 held the chase together. Iyer praised Connolly for keeping calm under pressure, especially after the team lost wickets in quick succession. “Some of the strokes he played were surreal, and in particular that one against Rashid Khan. It's a fast reality in the IPL, so staying cool is important, and he did just that,” Iyer said.

I’m really happy to help the team win.” Connolly, who was voted Player of the Match. “I was very much looking forward to this challenge, of playing with world-class players. “It feels great to perform on this level," he said. Of his playing style, the teenager said, “I’m more of a tempo player. “We prefer to go with the flow rather than trying for big shots.”

Punjab Kings began their campaign on a strong note with a calm chase and clinical execution, while Gujarat Titans were left to rue the missed opportunities.
