The Proteas made one change to their playing XI, bringing in spin all-rounder George Linde in place of fast bowler Anrich Nortje.

India, meanwhile, made multiple changes. Jasprit Bumrah returned to the side after missing the third T20I in Dharamsala due to personal reasons, replacing Harshit Rana. Washington Sundar also came into the XI in place of Kuldeep Yadav.

Sanju Samson was drafted in for vice-captain Shubman Gill, who has been ruled out of the last two matches of the series with a toe injury.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav, whose side leads the five-match series 2–1, said the final game carried added significance with the T20 World Cup scheduled early next year.

“What we want from this game is more important than winning the series,” Suryakumar said at the toss.
