Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League, yet at the same time, with the numerous trophies they have won in the past, there is a strange and rather unbelievable tradition; they cannot win the first matches.

Since they easily defeated Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk in 2012, Mumbai Indians have not won their opening IPL match. Since 2013, poor starts have become a pattern, with the team gaining strength towards the end of the tournament.

Interestingly, such an order has assumed a superstitious slant. MI lost their first game in all their title-winning seasons since 2013, nearly as though it was a curse to failure. Nevertheless, going into the IPL 2026, things seem to be falling their way, and it is a golden chance to finally end the long streak when they are scheduled to meet the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29.

Three reasons why and how MI could break their 13-year season opener jinx:

Mumbai Indians’ opening game curse faces its biggest test yet against KKR (Image source: IPL)

1. Going back to fortress Wankhede to open the season

It is the first time that the Mumbai Indians will open the campaign in the historic Wankhede Stadium since the last IPL 2019. The franchise has, over the decades, been denied the luxury of starting at home with the beginning of seasons in such places as Abu Dhabi, Chennai and Ahmedabad, even after the reassurance of the home-and-away version.

This backlash may be decisive. Mumbai Indians also have the highest win percentage of above 60 per cent at Wankhede, having 56 wins, which is the highest by any IPL team at a venue. This is an important advantage that is facilitated by familiar conditions, crowd support, and past domination.

2. Fortress against KKR on the home front

Although the Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the most successful franchises, they have always fared badly against the Mumbai Indians, particularly at the Wankhede. However, despite several victories, such as the few times of winning the title in such seasons as 2012 and 2024, KKR have mostly struggled to beat MI at this stadium.

The situation in Mumbai, coupled with the settled core of the Mumbai Indians, makes it a tough assignment for a transitioning KKR side that is yet to find its rhythm.

3. The bowling of KKR is not very promising against MI’s stability

The Mumbai Indians look much more established than the KKR side, which is confronted with massive bowling problems. Its main pacers, such as Matheesha Pathirana, Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, are not available, and KKR was left without the experienced attack.

This is extra pressure on the bowlers, such as Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani, who have not performed in the venue in the past. Varun Chakaravarthy has, in the meantime, not been consistent either, with a costly visit to the same ground.

Mumbai Indians have got the golden opportunity to capitalise with a strong batting unit and overall balance. Every indication is that IPL 2026 would be one of their nearest opportunities ever to break their curse of opening games.
