Sunrisers Hyderabad secured fast bowler Gerald Coetzee as an injury replacement for David Payne ahead of their IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, April 18. The former Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans pacer will boost SRH's thin pace bowling attack in the absence of captain Pat Cummins.
David Payne was signed as an injury replacement for Jack Edwards, but the Australian pacer's season ended early with a foot injury. With Pat Cummins' recovery extended, the Sunrisers have struggled with the ball and sit fifth in the points table with just two wins in five matches.
Ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad's game against Chennai Super Kings at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday, the team announced the arrival of Gerarld Coetzee for INR 2 crore. The South African right-arm pacer has previously played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024 and Gujarat Titans in 2025.
The 25-year-old has taken 15 wickets in 14 IPL innings at an economy rate of 10.37 so far. He boasts over 100 wickets in T20 cricket and was part of South Africa's T20I series against New Zealand last month.
Gerald Coetzee boosts Sunrisers Hyderabad's pace attack
After Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain's surprise inclusion and impact in the last game against Rajasthan Royals, SRH further boosted their pace attack by signing Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka as a replacement for David Payne, who is ruled out of the tournament with an ankle injury.
Now with Gerard Coetzee arriving at Sunrisers Hyderabad, the team boasts five Indian and four overseas pacers. Eshan Malinga has been keeping Cummins' seat warm, but has taken only five wickets in five innings at an economy rate of 10.40. Either Coetzee or Madushanka is expected to partner with Hinge and Hussain in SRH's next two matches against Chennai and Delhi.
