Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton’s explosive opening stand powered Mumbai Indians to the highest successful chase at the Wankhede Stadium, as they pushed Lucknow Super Giants to the brink of elimination in IPL 2026.
Mumbai chased down a daunting 229-run target with six wickets in hand and eight balls remaining. Despite having very slim chances of making the playoffs, MI delivered one of their most complete performances of the season.
This came even without their regular captain Hardik Pandya, who missed the match due to a back spasm, as stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav opted to bowl first.

Lucknow Super Giants post strong total after batting revival
LSG finally broke their batting struggles and produced a commanding effort with the bat. Nicholas Pooran led the charge with a blistering 63 off just 21 balls, bringing much-needed momentum to the innings.
Mitchell Marsh provided a solid platform at the top with a fluent 44, while Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh ensured a strong finish. LSG ended on 228 for 5 in their 20 overs, their most complete batting performance of the season.
With the ball, MI had limited bright spots. Corbin Bosch picked up two wickets and Raghu Sharma chipped in with one, but the rest of the attack struggled to contain the flow of runs.
Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton set up dominant chase
Mumbai approached the chase with clear intent and took control early. Ryan Rickelton was outstanding at the top, smashing 83 off just 32 deliveries in a high-impact innings.
Rohit Sharma who returned to the side after recovering from a hamstring injury complemented him perfectly, scoring 84 off 44 balls in a composed yet aggressive knock. The opening pair stitched together a massive 143-run partnership, which effectively put MI in command of the contest.
Though Lucknow managed to pick up a few wickets in the middle phase, the required rate was well under control. Naman Dhir and Will Jacks then finished the job calmly to seal an emphatic win.
Bowling struggles haunt LSG in crucial clash
It turned into a frustrating outing for LSG. Their batting unit finally clicked, but the bowling effort fell apart under pressure.
Most of their bowlers were taken apart, with little control or variation against an aggressive MI lineup. Only Manimaran Siddharth made a notable impact with two wickets. Mohammed Shami and Mohsin Khan managed one wicket each, but overall it was a disappointing performance.
Points table situation after MI vs LSG clash
The result does little to change the standings. MI registered just their third win in ten matches and remain in ninth position.

Lucknow Super Giants continue to sit at the bottom in tenth place, with their playoff hopes now hanging by a thread after this defeat.
LSG will be searching for answers after yet another setback. Despite multiple changes and a squad filled with quality players, their campaign has not gone as planned.
Rishabh Pant now faces mounting pressure to deliver results.
