Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has offered a surprising take on Abhishek Sharma’s lean run in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, saying the batter’s three consecutive ducks could actually be a “positive” for India.

Abhishek has featured in three matches so far and is yet to open his account in the tournament. However, ahead of India’s Super Eight clash against South Africa national cricket team, Shastri suggested that the dry spell might work in India’s favour.

“I look at it as a positive that Abhishek Sharma has got three zeros. Save your best for the important stages of the tournament. Teams will be a little worried that he hasn’t scored runs yet,” Shastri said on The ICC Review.

Shastri believes India, the defending champions, have already identified their best combination and are unlikely to make major changes for the Super Eight encounter.

India had made two changes in their final group-stage game against the Netherlands. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav made way for Arshdeep Singh, while Axar Patel was rested to provide Washington Sundar some game time. According to Shastri, the only real selection call could revolve around whether to pick Axar or Sundar.

“I think it will largely be the same side. You’ve got depth, you’ve covered all bases, and you need options,” Shastri said.

He emphasised the importance of bowling flexibility, particularly in conditions where dew can play a factor.

“When there’s dew around, you need that extra bowling option. Whether it’s Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya bowling his full quota, or even Tilak Varma chipping in for an over or two, those options are crucial. I don’t see them tinkering too much. The last game’s side looked well balanced,” he added.

Shastri also acknowledged South Africa’s growing confidence and predicted a closely fought contest between the two heavyweights. The upcoming match is also a rematch of the 2024 World Cup final.

“There’s a lot of self-belief in that South African side. They’re no pushovers. It’s going to be a cracking contest, and being a repeat of the 2024 final, everyone is looking forward to it,” Shastri said.
