Rajasthan Royals won the toss at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 13 and Riyan Parag chose to bowl first on what he described as a fresh surface being used for the first time this season.
SRH vs RR: Changes in the both sides
He was hopeful of some early stickiness to assist his bowlers. RR made two changes with Tushar Deshpande coming in for Brijesh Sharma and Lhuan-dre Pretorius making his first appearance of the season in place of a rested Shimron Hetmyer.
SRH also made two changes handing debuts to Bihar pacer Sakib Hussain and Vidarbha spinner Praful Hinge in place of the experienced Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat. The table toppers face a side desperate for momentum and the new surface adds further uncertainty to a contest that already had plenty of stakes on both sides.
SRH vs RR: Rajasthan Royals the form side and the players making them impossible to stop
RR arrive at Hyderabad with a perfect record, four wins from four, sitting first on the table with a net run rate of plus 2.055. They are not just winning games. They are winning them early and by significant margins and the reason for that is almost entirely the top three. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi leads the Orange Cap race with 200 runs at a powerplay strike rate of 275.86.
He is the story of IPL 2026 and every team that has faced him has left the ground wondering how to plan for a 15-year-old who hits Jasprit Bumrah for six off the first ball he faces. Yashasvi Jaiswal has 183 runs alongside him. These two together represent the most dangerous top order in the competition by some distance.
The bowling is equally settled. The pace combination of Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger gives Parag genuine variety and quality throughout an innings.
Parag himself spoke at the toss about the journey that has brought him to this captaincy role. "I was under Bhaiya for the longest time and then Sangaa did really well in improving me with all the decisions and involved me in all the tactical and strategic meetings. Now I think I have taken the onus up. Had to make a lot of tough calls but happy to be here."
SRH vs RR: Sunrisers Hyderabad middle order problem and what needs to change tonight
Sunrisers Hyderabad sit sixth with one win and two losses and the pattern of their season is becoming a familiar one. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head produce powerplays that other teams can only dream about.
Then the middle order slows the innings down by 15 to 20 runs and the lower order is left with too much to do. SRH's middle order strike rate of 141.35 is the lowest in the competition.
Heinrich Klaasen has 184 runs but his strike rate has dropped from 172 last season to 140 this year as he takes on an anchoring role that leaves the innings short of the acceleration it needs. SRH are also conceding 12.04 runs per over in the powerplay with the ball which means even when the top order scores heavily the bowling gives it back quickly.
The two debutants tonight add an interesting dimension. Sakib Hussain from Bihar will face Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with the new ball which is one of the more challenging debuts any young Indian pacer could be handed in IPL 2026.
Praful Hinge from Vidarbha comes in as the spin option replacing Unadkat. Whether either player can provide the early breakthrough SRH need against the most feared opening pair in the tournament is the question the match will answer.
