The playoff race has reached its sharpest edge, and Punjab Kings now have no room left for romance, reputation or excuses. After beginning IPL 2026 like a title-bound machine, Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings side have somehow dragged themselves into a final-league-match survival test against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday, May 23.

LSG are already out, sitting at the wrong end of the table, but that almost makes them more dangerous. They have no qualification pressure, no calculator anxiety and one last chance to spoil someone else’s season. For Punjab Kings, this is simple in one sense and cruel in another: beat Lucknow and stay alive; lose, and one of the most dramatic collapses in recent IPL history is complete.

Punjab Kings's IPL 2026 Playoff equation

Punjab Kings are placed outside the confirmed playoff group with 13 points from 13 matches and a Net Run Rate of +0.227. With Gujarat Titans sealing a top-two spot after their win over Chennai Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad already sitting in strong positions, only one playoff spot is realistically left for the chasing pack. That is where Punjab Kings' final match becomes a proper knockout without officially being called one.

The first part of the equation is non-negotiable: PBKS must beat LSG. A win takes them to 15 points. A defeat leaves them stranded on 13 and knocks them out. But even 15 may not be a clean passport to the playoffs because other contenders are still alive around them. Punjab Kings will need results involving teams like Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders to fall kindly enough so that nobody jumps beyond their reach.

The good news for Punjab Kings is their NRR. At +0.227, they still have a useful cushion over some of the chasing sides, especially if the final spot gets decided by teams bunched around 15 points. The bad news is everything else about their recent form. Punjab Kings were unbeaten after its first six matches and looked one of the most complete units in the tournament. Since then, they have lost six in a row.

PBKS latest defeat, a 23-run loss to RCB in Dharamsala, summed up the panic. Punjab Kings' top order fell apart early in the chase, and although Shashank Singh fought hard, the match had already slipped away. The batting has become inconsistent, the death bowling has leaked badly, and the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer has come under pressure because the side has repeatedly failed to close out games after strong starts.

Lucknow Super Giants' spoiler role

Lucknow Super Giants have nothing left to gain in terms of qualification, but they still have plenty to play for. Pride matters, home fans matter, and so does ending a poor season with one last win at Ekana. LSG have managed only four wins in the campaign and are carrying a damaging NRR of around -0.702, but their batting in the previous match against Rajasthan Royals showed why Punjab Kings cannot treat them like a dead side.

Against RR, Lucknow posted 220/5. Mitchell Marsh was outstanding again, smashing 96 off 57 balls with 11 fours and five sixes, while Josh Inglis blasted 60 off just 29 balls. That opening assault gave LSG a total that should have been match-winning on many nights, even though Rajasthan eventually chased it down with five balls to spare. The result was another defeat, but the message was clear: LSG's top order can still hurt anyone.

Marsh has been Lucknow's batting leader this season with 563 runs, and if he gets going at Ekana, Punjab Kings' playoff hopes could start wobbling inside the powerplay itself. Inglis gives them tempo, Rishabh Pant still carries match-winning power even in a disappointing season, and domestic pacer Prince Yadav has been one of their bright spots with 16 wickets.

Their previous meeting with Punjab Kings this season ended in a heavy 54-run defeat for LSG, but Prince Yadav impressed with 2/25 and Pant made 43 off 23. Lucknow will remember that they were outplayed then, and with nothing to lose now, they could be tempted to play a freer, more aggressive brand of cricket.

The Ekana surface is unlikely to be a pure batting beauty. The average first-innings total at the venue this season has been around 175, with second-innings scores dropping closer to 165. It has traditionally rewarded bowlers who take pace off, hit hard lengths and use spin intelligently. That makes the powerplay vital. If Punjab Kings allow Marsh and Inglis to reproduce anything close to their RR assault, the match could run away very quickly.

For PBKS, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal are central to the plan. Arshdeep has to strike early and deny LSG's openers easy width, while Chahal's middle-over control could decide whether Lucknow build calmly or lose momentum. Punjab Kings also need their overseas balance to finally click. Their bowling has been the biggest concern during the losing streak, and on a surface like Ekana, execution matters more than reputation.

With the bat, Punjab Kings need Shreyas Iyer to set the emotional tone. This is his biggest game of the season, not just because of the points table, but because PBKS' collapse has put his leadership under the scanner. Shashank Singh and Nehal Wadhera give them lower-order fight, but Punjab cannot afford another chase where the rescue act begins after the match is already half-lost.

For LSG, Marsh vs Arshdeep is the headline contest. Inglis against Punjab's new-ball movement is another key match-up. If LSG win the powerplay, they can turn this into a pressure trap. If Punjab strike early, Lucknow's eliminated status may start to show in their middle-order decision-making.
