India thrashed England by 100 runs in the final at the Harare Sports Club on Friday, February 6, sealing a remarkable chapter in the nation’s cricketing history. The victory completed an unprecedented sweep of ICC World Cups across age groups and genders over the last two years, a feat unmatched by any other country.
India’s golden run began with the senior men’s team lifting the T20 World Cup in 2024 under Rohit Sharma. It was followed by the Under-19 women’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2025 led by Niki Prasad, before the senior women’s team clinched the ODI World Cup later that year under Harmanpreet Kaur. Mhatre’s Under-19 side has now added the finishing touch to an extraordinary era of dominance.
Reacting after lifting the trophy, Mhatre described the title win as a moment he would cherish forever. “I can’t express my feelings. It’s a memorable moment for us and an incredible journey. The boys played really well, and the goals we set were executed perfectly. Everyone played their natural game, and I’m really happy,” Mhatre said.
“We are proud that we’ve carried forward the legacy. Rohit Sharma won the World Cup, Harmanpreet also did, and now we. It’s a great feeling to be part of that legacy.”
Mhatre also reserved special praise for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose extraordinary innings in the final left England stunned.
“He just kept going. We don’t really have words for him. What an innings he played. We know he’s a fabulous batsman, and he showed exactly what he can do. This is the attitude we’ve played with throughout the tournament,” he added.
“We may not play together again in the same team, but we can carry forward this mindset and continue to play this brand of cricket.”
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking carnage
Sooryavanshi produced one of the greatest knocks in Under-19 World Cup history, hammering a 55-ball century before finishing with a record-breaking 175 off just 80 deliveries, laced with 15 fours and 15 sixes. His breathtaking assault powered India to a mammoth 411/9 in 50 overs.
In reply, England were bowled out for 311 in 40.2 overs, despite a valiant counterattack from Caleb Falconer, who smashed 115 off 67 balls.
For India, RS Ambrish led the bowling effort with figures of 3/56, while Deepesh Devendran (2/64) and Kanishk Chouhan (2/63) chipped in with two wickets apiece.
Following India’s dominant win, Sooryavanshi was named Player of the Match for his sensational final and also walked away with the Player of the Series award. He finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer, amassing 439 runs in seven innings at an average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49, including one century and three fifties
