Keshav Maharaj has been appointed captain of the Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming SA20 season, the franchise announced on Friday (December 12). Maharaj, who led the Durban Super Giants last season, takes over from Rilee Rossouw. Rossouw, released ahead of the auction, was snapped up by the Jo’burg Super Kings for R500,000, while Maharaj was signed by the Capitals for R1.7 million. In a statement, the Capitals highlighted Maharaj’s leadership credentials: “Maharaj brings a wealth of international pedigree across formats, along with a proven track record of guiding teams with composure, clarity and intent. Having captained South Africa in white-ball cricket and served as a senior figure in the national setup, his experience, tactical understanding and consistency make him an invaluable addition. His presence strengthens the balance and direction of the Pretoria Capitals squad as the team heads into the new season.” With 27 wickets in 33 matches, Maharaj is the second-highest wicket-taker among spinners in SA20 history. Ahead of the auction, the Capitals also revamped their support staff, appointing Sourav Ganguly as head coach in place of Jonathan Trott, with Shaun Pollock joining as assistant coach. Holding the biggest purse (R32.5 million) at the September auction, the Capitals made several major signings, including Dewald Brevis for R16.5 million. Other notable buys were Connor Esterhuizen (R3.2 million), Lizaad Williams (R2.4 million), Lungi Ngidi (R2.3 million), Bryce Parsons (R1.9 million), Saqib Mahmood (R1.5 million), and Craig Overton (R1 million). Sherfane Rutherford and Will Jacks remained their pre-signed players, while Andre Russell joined as their wild-card pick. (By PTI Inputs)
