Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Riyan Parag has received a stark warning from legend Ravichandran Ashwin as the youngster steps into full time captaincy duties for IPL 2026.
With Sanju Samson moving to Chennai Super Kings, Parag now carries a bigger responsibility on his shoulders.
Increased responsibility on Riyan Parag
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin shared his views on RR’s leadership planning and the challenges ahead. He questions the leadership structure and suggests a different grooming approach for Riyan Parag.
"I am not very sure of their leadership stem. I would have made Ravindra Jadeja the captain for two years and groomed Riyan Parag under him," he said.
Ashwin further explains that Parag may be under pressure due to the responsibilities of leading a franchise at the IPL level.
"RR, being analytically sound, will help Riyan Parag. But I feel Riyan Parag, the captain, has too much on his plate. He is a free-spirited player. Yes, he has captained Assam. But there is a huge difference between captaining Assam and in the IPL," Ashwin added.
Squad balance concerns
Ashwin also spoke about key players in the RR setup and the challenges Parag might face while managing them. He highlights the inconsistency of Jofra Archer and the challenge of getting the best out of him.
"Jofra Archer blows hot and cold. How Parag is going to extract the best out of Archer is a big challenge."
He also adds that some experienced players will support Parag but certain questions remain around roles and form.
"Though Ravi Bishnoi isn't coming off a great season, he will turn the heat on, which will help Parag. Ravindra Jadeja will be his usual reliable self. Where Shimron Hetmyer bats is another question they have."
RR to start their campaign against CSK
Rajasthan Royals will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Chennai Super Kings at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. RR finished at the ninth position in the previous season and will be eager to bounce back strongly.
With the absence of Sanju Samson, the focus will firmly be on Riyan Parag and the young leadership group as they aim to guide the team through a crucial season.
