The BCCI has made a decision that it will not host the IPL 2026 opening ceremony to celebrate the event, but it will pay tribute to the victims of a stampede incident that took place in Bengaluru last year. The accident that killed 11 people on June 4, 2025, has left a dark cloud on the opening of the season. When the tournament starts, no pre-match celebration or entertainment will be done as a sign of respect.

IPL 2026 is set to start with Royal Challengers Bengaluru playing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, March 28. Though opening ceremonies are a longstanding tradition of the IPL glitz and glamour, the low-profile opening this year is an indication of a deliberate move by the board to ensure sensitivity over spectacle.

The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, stated that no cultural or entertainment event will be held, and the decision of relocation is aimed at honouring the memory of the dead people.

A quiet beginning of IPL 2026, but a grand finish is in sight

The IPL governing council is also considering a grand closing ceremony on the final day of the season, May 31, although there will not be a ceremony to kick off the event. By doing so, the league can retain its entertainment quotient and still be able to recognise the seriousness of last year’s tragedy.

It should be a contrast between the serious beginning and the festive end that will likely characterise the emotional colour of the season.

The 2025 opening ceremony at Eden Gardens had established a new height with performances by superstar Shah Rukh Khan, singer Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, and a dance performance by Disha Patani. The lack of such celebrations this year will certainly be missed, but it is seen as a sign of the league respecting the victims.

Meanwhile, out of the field, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been in the news with a historic change of ownership. The Aditya Birla Group-led consortium has bought the franchise at ₹16,660 crore, which makes it the most costly team in IPL history. Investors such as Bolt Ventures and Blackstone are members of the league, which shows its colossal commercial value.

In the new organisational structure, Aryaman Vikram Birla will be the chairman, and Satyan Gajwani will be the vice chairman. David Blitzer and Viral Patel are also among the consortium members. IPL 2026 opens somberly, which also brings a new dawn of growth and change to one of its most popular franchises.
