NEW DELHI: As India celebrated their ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 triumph, one moment stood out beyond the glittering trophy as Amanjot Kaur’s stunning catch dismissed Laura Wolvaardt and turned the final on its head.

But behind that brilliance was a story of quiet strength and sacrifice. While Amanjot shone on the field, her family endured heartbreak back home, keeping the news of her grandmother’s heart attack from her so she could stay focused on helping India lift the World Cup.

A family’s silent sacrifice

After India’s triumph, Amanjot’s father, Bhupinder Singh, revealed a deeply personal story behind her heroics. During the tournament, Amanjot’s grandmother suffered a heart attack, but the family decided to keep the news from her so she could stay focused on the campaign.

“My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjot’s pillar of strength since she first started playing cricket in the streets and parks near our home in Mohali,” Bhupinder Singh told The Indian Express. “Even when I was at my carpentry shop, she would sit outside to watch Amanjot play with the boys and encourage her.”

Soon after his comments, false reports began circulating that Amanjot’s grandmother had passed away. The all-rounder quickly addressed the rumours, reassuring everyone through a social media post.

Heyy, just wanted to share that my grandmother is doing well and in good health. Please don’t believe or spread false information circulating online. Thank you to everyone who reached out with care and concern,” she wrote. “My 90s kid is doing absolutely fine.”
