On the back of Tilak Varma’s blistering century, Mumbai Indians have finally won a game against Gujarat Titans by 99 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

With this win, MI have now gained valuable two points that pushed them to 7th position in the points table and kept their campaign alive.

Tilak Varma’s match defining century

After being invited to bat first, Mumbai had a similar start as their top order failed to fire once again. The openers, Danish Malewar and Quinton de Kock, managed just 2 and 13 runs respectively.

Meanwhile, Naman Dhir counter attacked with a quick 45 runs but he too was removed just when he looked settled and ready to accelerate. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals and Mumbai Indians were once reduced to 96 for four.

But then came the Tilak Varma show. The left-hand batter stood tall and produced a sensational knock, scoring an unbeaten 101 off just 45 deliveries, including 8 fours and 7 sixes. His innings completely changed the momentum and powered Mumbai Indians to a strong total of 199.

Ragiso Rabada shines despite Tilak’s heroics

For Gujarat Titans, it was still a clinical bowling performance despite Tilak’s brilliance. Kagiso Rabada was the star of the show with three wickets, all coming inside the powerplay. Apart from him, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj chipped in with one wicket each.

Coming out to chase a challenging total, it initially seemed like Gujarat Titans might put up a fight, but Mumbai Indians struck early. Jasprit Bumrah removed Sai Sudharsan on the very first ball of the innings, ringing early alarm bells in the Gujarat camp.

The collapse continued as none of the batters managed to build momentum. Captain Shubman Gill, who has been in good form, managed only 14 runs. Washington Sundar top scored with 26, but no batter could cross the 30-run mark as Gujarat Titans were bundled out for just 100 in 15.5 overs.

Mumbai Indians bowlers dominate proceedings

For MI, Bumrah set the tone early with a wicket on the first ball. Ashwani Kumar stole the show with a brilliant four wicket haul that completely dismantled the Gujarat Titans batting lineup.

Apart from him, Mitchell Santner picked up two wickets in his three overs while conceding just 16 runs. Allah Ghazanfar also chipped in with two wickets to ensure there was no comeback for Gujarat.

Overall, it was a dominant 99 run victory for Mumbai Indians, giving them a much-needed sigh of relief after coming into this clash with four consecutive defeats.

The five-time champions, known for their unexpected comebacks, will now look to build on this momentum and keep their campaign alive.
